JAMESTOWN, N.D. –
Allie Berns delivered a dominant double-double performance, but the University of Jamestown women's basketball team fell 83-72 to Minot State on Thursday night at Harold Newman Arena.
Minot State (11-17, 8-13 NSIC) connected on 13 three-pointers and shot efficiently from the free-throw line to hold off the Jimmies (7-18, 5-16 NSIC) in a fast-paced conference clash.
The visitors set the pace early, erupting for 28 points in the first quarter to take a seven-point lead. Jamestown's defense tightened in the second period, holding Minot State to just 14 points, but the Jimmies still trailed 42-32 heading into the locker room.
Jamestown found its offensive rhythm coming out of the break. The Jimmies attacked the glass and outscored Minot State 21-18 in the third quarter, trimming the deficit to 60-53 entering the final frame. However, Minot State held their nerve down the stretch, putting up 23 points in the fourth quarter and capitalizing at the foul line to secure the victory.
Berns was a relentless force in the paint for the Jimmies. She finished with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds—an impressive nine of which were offensive—while also recording two blocks.
Haidyn Crockett provided a major spark from the outside, scoring 18 points and shooting an efficient 4-of-6 from three-point range.
Jessika Lofstrom battled inside for 15 points and eight rebounds while playing 39 minutes.
Hali Savela was also active on the boards, grabbing eight rebounds to go along with three assists.
Tiyahna Trottier paced the Minot State offense with a game-high 26 points, shooting 8-of-15 from the floor. Taryn Hamling added 22 points, fueled by a 4-of-6 effort from beyond the arc and a perfect 8-for-8 mark at the charity stripe. Maya Aguilar chipped in 16 points, hitting four three-pointers of her own, while Jessica Mogen controlled the glass for the visitors with 10 rebounds and five assists.
The Jimmies relentlessly attacked the glass, outrebounding Minot State 40-32. Jamestown pulled down 18 offensive rebounds compared to just six for the visitors, translating into 18 second-chance points. Minot State did its damage from deep, shooting 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from three-point territory, while the Jimmies were held to 25 percent (6-of-24).
The foul line proved to be a major difference-maker. Minot State shot 85.7 percent (18-of-21) from the stripe, while Jamestown struggled to capitalize, converting just 57.1 percent (12-of-21) of their attempts.
Jamestown closes out the season on Saturday at University of Mary. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
