SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Jamestown women's tennis team opened Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play with a thrilling 4-3 victory over the University of Sioux Falls on Friday afternoon at Huether Family Match Pointe.
With the win, the Jimmies improve to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC, while Sioux Falls drops to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Jamestown secured the crucial doubles point by winning two of the three matches. At the No. 1 spot, the duo of
Julie van Zeijl and
Bodil van Zeijl defeated Chloe Siegfort and Emily Thinnsen 6-3. The Jimmies clinched the point at No. 3 doubles, where
Mariia Sharandachenko and
Anna Sharandachenko earned a hard-fought 7-5 victory over Emma Rangel and Mylin Lemke.
Sioux Falls avoided the sweep in doubles play at the No. 2 position, with Ella Hancock and Sydney Osburn defeating
Laia Vallespi and
Sydney Friesen 6-0.
In singles action, the van Zeijl sisters continued their strong play at the top of the lineup.
Julie van Zeijl claimed a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Siegfort 6-0, 6-4.
Bodil van Zeijl added another point for the Jimmies at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Osburn.
Mariia Sharandachenko provided the decisive fourth point for Jamestown at No. 4 singles, cruising past Thinnsen 6-2, 6-2.
The Cougars kept the match close with wins in the remaining singles flights. At No. 3 singles, Hancock rallied after dropping the first set to defeat
Anna Sharandachenko in a super-tiebreaker, 0-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-5). Rangel defeated Vallespi 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, and Lemke topped Friesen 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Jamestown returns to the court on Saturday against Augustana (S.D.) at 11:30 a.m.
