MITCHELL, S.D.-- The University of Jamestown men's wrestling team took to the mats on Saturday, getting significant bracket runs from
Dane Hartmann and
Isaac Chavarria to highlight the team's action at the DWU Open, hosted by Dakota Wesleyan University.
RESULTS
Hartmann put together a resilient performance at 197 pounds, battling his way through the consolation bracket to reach the fifth place match. After dropping his opening-round bout to Augustana's Lane Knutson, Hartmann found his rhythm in the wrestle-backs. He secured back-to-back first-period pins, taking down teammate Alik Sigrah in 1:30 and Dakota Wesleyan's Brody Brandt in 2:16. Hartmann kept his momentum rolling with a tight 11-10 decision over Fort Hays State's Jonathan Rigler, followed by a 10-4 decision against UMary's Ty Wiedrich to reach the consolation semifinals. Though his run was halted by Northern State's Tanner Meyers, Hartmann's four-match win streak anchored the Jimmies' efforts on the day.
At 149 pounds, Chavarria also assembled a strong 4-2 record for Jamestown. Chavarria opened his tournament with a gritty 13-10 sudden-victory decision over Chadron State's Caleb Nadig. After falling to Bismarck State's Hudson Egeberg in the third round, Chavarria rattled off three consecutive victories in the consolation rounds. He dominated Sioux Falls' Sonny Lora with a 24-7 technical fall (6:26), dispatched Augustana's Graham Wilde with a 7-1 decision, and edged Minot State's Brayden Guerrero 10-9 before eventually bowing out to Northern State's Calder Sheehan.
The Jimmies also picked up a pair of individual victories at 165 and 197 pounds. Jonny Ramos (165) claimed a hard-fought 10-8 decision over Fuhad Salau of Sioux Falls in the opening championship round. In the 197-pound consolation bracket, Niko Sigrah secured a victory by fall, pinning Bismarck State's Greg Fuher in 1:56.
Jamestown also saw action from Drake Sparklin (125), Zairyn Ramos-Semana (125, Harley Hardison (133), Owyn Schreder (157), Alik Sigrah (197 lbs), and Austin Celzo (285), who all gained valuable mat time against a tough field of regional competitors.
