Christian Komitas named new Jimmie men's wrestling head coach

JAMESTOWN, N.D. — The University of Jamestown announced today the hiring of Christian Komitas as the new head coach of the Jimmie men's wrestling program. Komitas arrives in Jamestown equipped with a proven track record of culture building, academic excellence, and high-level NCAA Division II success.

Komitas comes to the Jimmies after serving as the Graduate Assistant Wrestling Coach at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis., since August 2024. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in leading the Rangers to an NCAA Division II team national runner-Up finish in 2026.

"We're really excited to welcome Christian to the Jimmie family," said Austin Hieb, University of Jamestown Director of Athletics. "He brings with him knowledge of the NSIC and what it takes to be successful in the league. We cannot wait for him to get campus and to see how he begins to make an impact on our men's wrestling program and athletic department."

At UW-Parkside, Komitas was an integral part of a coaching staff that produced 12 national qualifiers, seven All-Americans, and one national champion over two seasons. Beyond his on-mat technical and tactical instruction, Komitas demonstrated a deep commitment to the holistic development of his student-athletes. In 2025, he helped guide the roster to an NWCA Division II Team Scholar title, boasting a highly impressive 3.56 average GPA. He also established himself as a premier recruiter in the Midwest, helping secure a 2025 recruiting class featuring 14 individuals with a combined 25 state place-winning honors and five state championships.

"I am extremely excited to get to work building a culture of excellence within the Jamestown men's wrestling program," Komitas said.  "I would like to thank Athletic Director Austin Hieb as well as President Polly Peterson for their belief and trust in me.

"It was evident from the moment that I stepped foot on campus that the University is full of ambitious, intelligent, and team-oriented individuals. We have all of the resources and support necessary to achieve at a high level, and I look forward to immersing myself in the Jamestown community. "

Before his time at UW-Parkside, Komitas gained extensive coaching experience developing elite-level talent. He served as an assistant coach at SPAR Wrestling Academy in Aurora, Ill., where he instructed state and national champions, and at DeKalb High School, helping lead the team to a state runner-up finish. Volunteering at Aurora University, Komitas also assisted with technical instruction and recruiting for both the men's and women's teams.

As a student-athlete, Komitas was a highly respected leader. Wrestling for Aurora University, he was chosen as team captain each year and was a 2024 NCAA Division III national championships qualifier. He also earned Greco-Roman All-American honors at the 2023 U23 Nationals and represented his peers on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Komitas earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a coaching minor from Aurora University in 2024 and is anticipating the completion of his Master of Science in Sport Management from UW-Parkside in May 2026.
