Jimmies Extend Unbeaten Streak to Five Games in 2-2 Draw at SMSU

Marshall, Minn. - The University of Jamestown women's soccer team fell behind twice but worked a 2-2 draw on the road to Southwest Minnesota State University Sunday afternoon at Mattke Field.

UJ's unbeaten streak gets to five games with their overall record at 4-4-3 and conference record at 4-2-2. The Mustangs move to 1-7-3 and 1-5-2 in the NSIC.

The Jimmies had some early chances in the second minute off a corner kick. There were a couple of loose balls inside the box following the kick, but too much traffic made it difficult to get an open look from so close to the net. Jamestown pushed down the field a bit later and Gaby Lopez had an angled shot very close to the net, but it was saved by Kennady Krebs.

However, despite Jamestown dominating possession early on, SMSU made their first shot on goal count. Jada Backes pushed the ball down the right side of the field, then crossed it to Karla Paredes-Nino right at the 6-yard box for the score.

Gaby Lopez had another good look in the 23rd minute when she broke free from the defense up the middle. The sophomore took on a shot right outside the box but Krebs made a nice save on a shot right above her head. Southwest Minnesota State came back down on the other end 30 seconds later and put a shot on net for Taylor Musser's first save of the night.

Into the 35th minute, SMSU had a free kick out towards midfield sent right up the middle towards the UJ net which would have resulted in a goal had the Mustangs not been ruled offside.

Jamestown was right back into the Mustangs' end after this. Off a corner kick elected to play short, Langley Grow crossed it towards the net and Marisa Brown flew in up the middle and headed it into the left side of the net as the Jimmies evened the score 1-1 in Marshall.

The first half buzzer sounded a bit later with the score tied up at one in a period where Jamestown largely held a ball-possession advantage. Total shots were 6-2 Jimmies with four of these on net for Jamestown and both Mustang shot attempts on net.

In the 49th minute, Jada Backes controlled the ball about 25 yards away from the Jamestown net. Backes was all alone and had two Jamestown defenders plus Musser to get by but it did not matter. The Mustangs leading scorer got around the defense, thought she missed the shot off the right pipe. However, Parades-Nino came down unaccounted for on the right side of the field to put it in on the wide-open net as the Mustangs reclaimed the lead, 2-1.

Into the 58th minute, some nice passing around the SMSU net lead to an open shot from about 10 yards out by Emma Belyk with Krebs out of position, but the shot missed wide to the left by a few feet. Bailey Fox had another great chance in the 64th minute, but this shot was right at Krebs for the save.

The Jimmies were ramping up the pressure, and it paid off in the 67th minute. A forced turnover deep in the Mustangs zone led to an open look from Kyah Gabel a few yards outside of the box. Gabel launched an absolute missile with authority, and it was wonderfully placed into the top left of the net for the game-tying goal.

Following the goal, the Mustangs got the ball into the Jamestown end with the Orange and Black pinned back in their zone for about five minutes, but the Jimmies staved off a corner kick and a good look from the Mustangs from the top edge of the Jamestown box which missed.

The Jimmies had shots by Gabel and Andra Greer the rest of the way, but to no avail. In the closing 10 seconds, Jamestown had a transition opportunity, but a pass up to Bre Oettle was a bit long, and time expired as the two sides tied 2-2.

Brown's goal was the sophomore's first of her career while Gabel got her second tally of the season. Oriana Borrome notched an assist for Gabel's goal while Grow got her first assist of 2026 season. Musser made two saves in the draw.

Final shots ended with Jamestown leading 14-5 while shots on target were 8-4. The Jimmies had five chances on corner kicks while the Mustangs got three.

UJ will be back at Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium on Friday, October 9 over Homecoming Weekend when they will host the University of Mary at 6 p.m.
