Jamestown, N.D. - The University of Jamestown women's soccer team lost a tough game after allowing the game-winning goal in the 87th minute of a 2-1 defeat to the University of Mary Friday night at Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium. Â
The loss snaps a five-game unbeaten streak for the Jimmies as they fall to 4-5-3 and 4-3-2 in the Northern Sun. The Marauders get themselves to 7-2-3 and 6-1-2 in the conference. Â
The Jimmies were stuck pinned back in their own zone early, and in large part, for the majority of the game. It only took 2:04 into the game until the Marauders notched a shot off the left post that UJ was able to boot out towards midfield a bit later. Â
Jamestown applied some pressure in the 10th minute, where Bre Oettle came down the right side of the field, but was cut off and was forced into an awkward shot attempt that was blocked away. Â
UJ netminder Ellie Dake was active early, including a diving stop in the 14th minute. UMary continued to pour on shots in the half whenever they could. There were plenty of times in which the Marauders had wide open looks, but luckily most of these missed the net. Â
Marisa Brown had a long shot from the opposite side of the field in the 31st minute that ended up being the only Jamestown shot on goal in the half. The Jimmies got their first corner kick in the 39th minute, but no shot attempts came from this. Â
Despite getting drastically outshot 13-2 in the first half, Jamestown went into halftime with the score still tied 0-0. Dake had three saves in the first 45 minutes. Â
After no shots on net for either team through the first 14 minutes of the second half, UMary broke the ice in the 60th minute. Maggie Bono controlled the ball on the inside of the Jamestown box, beat a defender, and then wound up for a shot from around seven yards away. Brown came up with a big, blocked shot on Bono's attempt, but the rebound went right back to her and her second attempt resulted in a goal into the bottom right of the net for a 1-0 Marauders lead. Â
The Jimmies needed an equalizer but did not get much zone time in the UMary end of the field initially. The Marauders hit the crossbar on two more occasions over the next 25 minutes and got themselves three more corner kicks in addition to a plethora of shot attempts. Â
With time ticking down in the 84th minute, the Jimmies worked their way up the field along the right side off of around six throw-ins. Finally, a ball made its way to Gaby Lopez around the top right corner of UMary's box. The ball was knocked off of Lopez's foot, but it went right to Langley Grow. Grow took a couple of dribbles, then took an awkward shot, but it ended up being perfectly placed into the top left corner of the net and out of the reach of Kadyn Dilger for the game-tying goal. This was the first shot attempt from Jamestown in over 50 minutes of action. Â
UJ pressured in the next couple of minutes, and a nice ball to the corner set up a deep shot by Kyah Gabel with four minutes remaining, though she missed high and to the right. Â
However, the tying goal by Grow was short-lived as UMary got their lead back in the 87th minute of action. An errant pass towards the center of the field led to a 3v2 booking for Dake and a couple of nice passes by Chloe Brand and Bono opened up space for Dina Polanco. The NSIC leading scorer ended up all alone with Dake and won the battle, charging the ball and beating the Jamestown netminder bottom right for a goal with 3:06 left to play. Â
The Jimmies were forced into their zone for the final few minutes with UMary doing a nice job of keeping the ball as far away from their net as they could, selecting the Jamestown high corner as their choice. The clock expired with UJ losing a 2-1 heartbreaker on Homecoming weekend. Â
Grow's goal was her first of the season, and after her assist in her last game, the sophomore has recorded points in back-to-back contests for the first time in her career. Dake had a solid night with eight saves on 10 shots faced. Â
Shots did not look pretty with the end results 30-4 on total attempts and 10-2 on net won by the Marauders. Jamestown had two corner kick chances, while UMary notched six. Â
The Jimmies will look to continue their push in the standings as they play at Minot State University on Sunday, October 11 at 1 p.m. Â
