JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The University of Jamestown women's basketball team leaned on a stingy defensive effort and timely shooting to defeat University of Sioux Falls 57-53 on Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena, ending a 12-game losing streak.
In a game where neither team shot better than 33 percent from the field, the Jimmies (5-15, 3-13 NSIC) made key plays down the stretch to secure the victory over the Cougars (10-12, 7-9 NSIC).
Points were at a premium early, as Jamestown took a slim 14-10 lead after the first quarter. The defensive slugfest continued into the second period, with the Jimmies maintaining a narrow advantage to lead 28-26 at halftime.
UJ created some separation in the third quarter, outscoring Sioux Falls 18-16 to take a four-point lead into the final frame. The fourth quarter was a grind for both offenses, as the teams combined for just 22 points. However, Jamestown's defense stood tall, holding the Cougars to 11 points in the quarter to seal the win.
Haidyn Crockett provided the offensive spark for Jamestown, leading the team with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Jessika Lofstrom recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Allie Berns and Emily Kurkowski each contributed 10 points to the winning effort. Berns added eight rebounds, while Kurkowski chipped in two blocks. Samantha Paulsen finished with nine points, hitting three three-pointers.
The Jimmies found success from deep, connecting on 11-of-33 three-pointers (33.3 percent) compared to 9-of-37 (24.3 percent) for Sioux Falls. USF held a slight edge on the glass, 50-49, including 19 offensive rebounds.
Anna Vaaler led Sioux Falls with 14 points and eight rebounds but struggled from the floor, shooting just 4-of-20. Alexis Rose added 13 points for the Cougars, while Krista Langager grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Jimmies take on Minnesota State University Moorhead on Thursday, February 5 at 5:30 p.m.
