Balanced effort leads Jimmies past MSUM

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The University of Jamestown women's basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat MSU Moorhead 65-58 on Thursday night at Harold Newman Arena.

In a game that featured five lead changes and three ties, the Jimmies (6-15, 4-13 NSIC) outscored the Dragons (10-11, 7-10 NSIC) in the second, third, and fourth quarters to secure the home victory.

MSU Moorhead held a narrow 13-11 advantage after the opening period, limiting Jamestown to just 11 points. The Jimmies responded in the second quarter, outscoring the Dragons 15-14 to trim the halftime deficit to a single point.

UJ took control after the break, pouring in 22 points in the third quarter while holding MSUM to 12. This crucial stretch gave the Jimmies a lead they would not relinquish, as they closed out the game with a 17-point fourth quarter despite a late push from the visitors.

Allie Berns paced the Jimmies with a game-high 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting, adding seven rebounds and three assists. Haidyn Crockett filled the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

Jessika Lofstrom contributed 12 points and four rebounds, providing key baskets in the paint. Samantha Paulsen chipped in nine points and six rebounds while anchoring the defense with two blocks.

Ashton Safranski led MSU Moorhead with 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists while playing 38 minutes. Caylin Kelly added 10 points for the Dragons, who struggled offensively, shooting just 33.8 percent from the field.

The battle on the boards was dead even, with both teams pulling down 41 rebounds. The Jimmies forced 18 turnovers and recorded eight steals, converting those opportunities into 18 points. UJ shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the floor and connected on seven three-pointers.

The Jimmies host Minnesota-Crookston on Saturday at 1 p.m.
