DICKINSON, N.D.—The University of Jamestown baseball team mounted an impressive comeback attempt Friday evening against Mayville State (N.D.) University, but the Comets held on for a 12-11 win at Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark in the quarterfinals of the North Star Athletic Association postseason tournament.
The Jimmies trailed 12-7 going into the bottom of the ninth, but
Ryan Muizelaar and
Jordan Singleton hit back-to-back home runs, cutting the deficit to 12-9. After
Isaiah Roebuck was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a balk,
Ben Patton launched a two-run home run to bring Jamestown within a run. MSU reliever Jack Wold got the final out to end UJ's comeback bid.
After three scoreless innings to begin the game, the Comets struck for the game's first run in the top of the fourth, but their lead was short-lived. Muizelaar led off the bottom of the inning with a home run, then
Jordan Singleton reached on a base hit.
Triston Madison put down a bunt that MSU pitcher Garret Lundmark fielded and threw wide of first base, allowing
Dallas Cummins, courtesy running for Singleton, to score from first. Madison ended up at third on the play and came home on Roebuck's sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. Patton followed with a solo home run putting Jamestown ahead 4-1.
The Comets got to Jimmie starter
Luke Zimmer for three runs in the top of the fifth to tie the score, but Jamestown responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half, the first coming on Madison's sacrifice fly, and the other two on a single by Roebuck.
In a wild top of the sixth, Mayville State pushed home four runs on only one hit, but took advantage of a Jimmie error and a balk that moved two runners into scoring position. By the time UJ reliever
Ben Bohlmann got the final out of the inning, the Comets had taken an 8-7 lead.
A two-run home run in the top of the eighth and back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the ninth gave Mayville State a five-run cushion as the Jimmies came to the plate in their final at-bat.
Muizelaar was 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs, three runs scored, and two RBI. Patton also homered twice as part of a 3-for-5 game, driving in three and scoring twice. Roebuck and Singleton each were 2-for-3.
Bohlmann (2-3) took the loss in relief of Zimmer, giving up five runs, just two of which were earned, on three hits in two innings. Zimmer went five-plus innings, allowing five earned runs on four hits.
Jamestown (32-17) will face either La Sierra (Calif.) or Dickinson State (N.D.) in a loser-out matchup on Friday.
