Baseball takes second one-run loss in NSAA tournament

DICKINSON, N.D. – The University of Jamestown baseball team was eliminated from the North Star Athletic Association tournament Friday afternoon, falling 4-3 to La Sierra (Calif.) at Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark.

Jamestown finishes the season at 32-18, and La Sierra moves to 20-19 while keeping their postseason hopes alive.

Tied at 3-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, the Golden Eagles' Gavin Copeland led off with a single, and was replaced by pinch-runner Trevor Smentek. Christian Navarro was hit by a pitch and Colin Mitchell re-entered to run at first. A wild pitch by Jimmie reliever Ben Bohlmann moved the runners to second and third, then Bohlmann hit Bobby Benavidez with a pitch to load the bases. Dean Samuel then singled to center, scoring Smentek with the winning run.

The Jimmies wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first as Ryan Muizelaar singled with two out to bring in Chase Burke.

Samuel hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to put La Sierra ahead 3-1, but Muizelaar singled in the fifth to score Landon Runge to make it a 3-2 game.

UJ tied the game in the top of the sixth. Triston Madison singled and was replaced by pinch runner Dallas Cummins. An error and wild pitch by La Sierra moved Cummins to third, and he came home on Landon Runge's groundout to first base.

Avery Liestman went 7 2/3 innings on the mound, striking out seven and walking three while giving up three runs on eight hits. Bohlmann (2-4) came on to get the final out in the eighth but was responsible for the game-winning run an inning later.

Runge, Madison, and Ben Patton all had two hits for Jamestown.
