Baseball takes two from No. 14 OUAZ

TUCSON, Ariz.—The Jimmie baseball team ran its winning streak to five games, winning twice against No. 14 Ottawa (Ariz.) 3-1 and 7-4 on Friday afternoon at Kino Sports Complex.

THE BASICS

GAME ONE
  • Avery Liestman allowed one run on six hits in seven innings, tossing a complete game with six strikeouts to improve to 4-1.
  • The Jimmies scored twice with two outs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Julian Romero doubled and Chase Burke followed with a single. After Burke took second on a wild pitch, Ryan Muizelaar singled to score both runners.
  • Romero got things started again in the fifth by drawing a walk, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Muizelaar came through with his second RBI single of the game, and the Jimmies led 3-1.
  • UJ was held to four hits in the opener, with Muizelaar (2), Burke, and Romero finding the hit column.
GAME TWO
  • OUAZ opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first, then the Jimmies countered in the bottom half of the inning. Alex Alva's double and Jordan Singleton's single helped UJ take a 2-1 lead after one.
  •  The Spirit took a 3-2 lead with a pair of runs in the third, and added another to lead 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth.
  • Jamestown sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth while scoring five times without the benefit of a hit.
  • Romero and Will Bachman each drew bases-loaded walks, and a pair of errors led to three more runs.
  • Joe Hart, who came on to get the final out of the sixth, was the beneficiary of the Jimmie comeback. He worked 1 1/3 innings for his first win of the season.
  • Muizelaar posted his second multi-hit game of the day and seventh of the season, to tie Alex Alva for the team lead.
UP NEXT
  • The Jimmies finish their Arizona trip on Saturday with a doubleheader against OUAZ in Surprise, Ariz., beginning at 5:00 PM Central.
