Baseball sets scoring record in win over VCSU

DICKINSON, N.D.—The University of Jamestown baseball team capped off the North Star Athletic Association Preseason Classic with a pair of wins on Saturday, setting a new program record with a 33-0 win over Valley City State (N.D.), then followed with a 19-4 victory over Mayville State (N.D.)

THE BASICS
FRIDAY SCORES:  Jamestown 4, Mayville State 2; Dickinson State 6, Jamestown 2
SATURDAY SCORES: Jamestown 33, Valley City State 0; Jamestown 19, Mayville State 4
LOCATION: Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark / Dickinson, N.D.

FRIDAY VS. MAYVILLE STATE
  • Jordan Singleton's two-run double in the first staked the Jimmies to a 2-0 lead, then the Comets cut the lead in half with a single run in the bottom of the second.
  • The score remained 2-1 until the top of the sixth. Ryan Muizelaar and Dallas Cummins pulled off a double steal to give UJ runners at second and third. Varen Sabino grounded out to second but Muizelaar came home to make it 3-1 as Cummins took third.
  • Isaiah Roebuck followed with a double to score Cummins for a 4-1 lead.
  • A solo home run by the Comets accounted for the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Avery Liestman (5-1) won for the third time in his last four starts, going the distance in his fourth complete game of the season. Liestman struck out five and did not walk a batter.
  • Chase Burke had a pair of hits and stole a base for Jamestown.
FRIDAY VS. DICKINSON STATE
  • Ryan Muizelaar's two-run home run in the bottom of the first put Jamestown ahead 2-0, but that would be all the offense for the Jimmies against Dickinson State.
  • The Blue Hawks scored once in the top of the third to make it 2-1, then plated four more in the sixth and another in the seventh to take a 6-2 win.
  • Muizelaar was 2-for-4, while Chase Burke doubled. Landon Runge and Julian Romero also had hits for the Jimmies.
  • Luke Zimmer (2-3) struck out 8 in 5 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits.
SATURDAY VS. VALLEY CITY STATE
  • Jamestown batters clubbed eight home runs, including three by Ben Patton and two from Ryan Muizelaar as part of a 28-hit attack in setting a new single-game record with 33 runs.
  • Chase Burke, Isaiah Roebuck, and Landon Runge also went deep along with Muizelaar in the first inning as the Jimmies jumped out to a 6-0 lead.
  • A ten-run second inning broke the game open, and after being held scoreless in the third, Jamestown had multiple-run innings over the last four frames, including 10 more in the top of the seventh.
  • Patton's two-run shot in the sixth pushed the lead to 22-0, then he added a pair of three-run homers in the seventh to close out the scoring. He finished 4-for-5 with a pair of walks, 8 RBI, and 6 runs scored.
  • Muizelaar went 3-for-3 with 3 runs and 3 RBI, and Runge was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.
  • Burke, Dallas Cummins, Sy Steele, Triston Madison, Matson Hoff, Julian Romero, and Riki Okamoto all had two hits. Every UJ starter recorded at least one hit.
  • While the Jimmie hitters were piling up the hits, Ryan Radkey was keeping the Viking batters from doing the same. Radkey carried a no-hitter for 6 2/3 innings and struck out 10 to improve his season record to 3-2. It was his first shutout as a Jimmie and second complete game of the season.
SATURDAY VS. MAYVILLE STATE UP NEXT
  • The Jimmies are set to take on Dakota State (S.D.) in the conference opener on Friday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. in Madison, S.D.
