Jimmies Take Early Lead but Drop Tight Match to Dragons

Moorhead, Minn. —The University of Jamestown volleyball team pushed MSU Moorhead to the limit in a five-set battle on Saturday night at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse, but the Dragons rallied late to secure a 3-2 victory. The Jimmies came out strong, taking the first two sets behind clutch kills and timely defense, but MSUM responded with a surge of momentum to claim the final three frames.

TOP PERFORMERS

  • Ava Mueller led the offense with 15 kills, 3 solo blocks and 3 aces. 
  • Charlotte Lempka was effective with 9 kills and 1 solo block
  • Momoka Minamiya was the leader in the back row, recording 18 digs. 
  • The setting was split between Lily Bertsch (21 assists) and Ava Bertsch (19 assists). Ava also chipped in 12 digs.
  • Corbyn Menz and Addison Brook tallied 7 kills respectively and Menz contributed 13 digs
  • Addison Ertz was also in on the action having 5 kills 

KEY PLAYS

•Set 1 (25-21 UJ Win): The Jimmies won the tight opening set after pulling away late from a 17-17 tie. A clutch kill from Addison Ertz put the Jimmies up 22-19. A subsequent kill by Corbyn Menz and a dump by Lily Bertsch was enough for the Jimmies to finish the set.

• Set 2 (25-23 UJ Win): The Dragons started the set on 3-0 run. The Jimmies however fought back and with a kill from Corbyn Menz, an ace by Lily Bertsch and a Dragon error the Jimmies tied the set 15-15. The Dragons answered back and took the lead 21-17. The Jimmies rallied back outscoring the Dragons 5-1 highlighted by kills from Addison Brooke and Ave Mueller to win the set. 

• Set 3 (25-16 MSUM Win): The Jimmies and the Dragons were in a back and forth battle but a strong 6-0 scoring run by the Dragons gave them a strong lead of 14-10. The Jimmies tried to mount the comeback but the Dragons were in full control on a 9-2 run to end the set.

• Set 4 (25-11 MSUM Win): The Dragons dominated the set with their offense. A highlight for the Jimmies came at 23-10 when Charlotte Lempka had a kill assisted by Lily Bertsch

• Set 5 (15-8 MSUM Win): The deciding set saw the Jimmies fight however the Dragons always had a response to stop the Jimmies momentum. Addison Brooke then scored a kill to make it 9-10 assisted by Ava Bertsch. MSUM then went on a key 5-2 run to take the end the set and win the game.
