Jimmies come up short in comeback bid at Mayville State

MAYVILLE, N.D.— Trailing by 18 points early in the fourth quarter, the 24th-ranked University of Jamestown women's basketball team rallied to get within two points before the Comets iced the game at the free throw line, handing the Jimmies a 77-72 loss Saturday afternoon at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jamestown shot 33 percent and missed all eight three-point attempts in the first quarter, while the Comets shot 56 percent and led 25-19 after ten minutes.
  • The Jimmies' shooting woes continued in the second quarter as they hit on just 4 of 18 shots overall (22 percent), including 1 of 10 on shots inside the three-point line. On the other side of the floor, the Comets hit on 3 of 5 threes and 6 of 12 shots overall, building a 46-32 lead going into halftime.
  • UJ managed to shoot somewhat better in the third quarter (35 percent) but still were outscored 20-18 and trailed by as many as 23 points.
  • The Jimmies missed their first 7 shots of the fourth quarter, and the first points that did not come from the free throw line were a three-pointer from Kate Busek with 4:58 to play.
  • Kate Cordes finished a 20-5 run with a three-pointer that cut Mayville State's lead to 73-70 with 39 seconds left, and it looked like Jamestown was on the verge of completing the comeback.
  • Cordes made a pair of free throws to make it a 74-72 game, but without any timeouts remaining, the Jimmies were forced to foul.
  • The Comets made three out of their final four free throws to hold on for a 77-72 victory.
  • Cordes was one of four Jimmies in double figures, finishing with 17 points. She was followed by Hannah Hagel with 13, Busek with 11, and Jayden Wiest with 10.
  • Busek pulled down 9 rebounds and along with four others, dished out a pair of assists.
