Baseball finishes weekend with split at ninth-ranked Doane

CRETE, Neb.-- The University of Jamestown baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against ninth-ranked Doane University, winning 10-1 in the opener before the Tigers won 7-3 in the second game.

THE BASICS

  • SCORES: Jamestown 10, #9 Doane 1; #9 Doane 7, Jamestown 3

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Alex Alva got the Jimmies on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the third.
  • Jordan Singleton led off the fourth with a solo home run, and Isaiah Roebuck and Alva had RBI singles as Jamestown extended their lead to 5-0.
  • Doane scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth, then UJ put four more runs on the board in the next half-inning.
  • With the bases loaded, Alva singled to score Jett Nelson for the first run. Roebuck came home on a wild pitch, then Ryan Muizelaar hit a two-run single to score Alva and Riki Okamoto.
  • Avery Liestman (4-0) went the distance on the mound, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out seven and walked one.
  • Alva and Roebuck finished with three hits each, and Singleton also had a multi-hit game. 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Jamestown pushed home two runs in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit.
  • Alex Alva and Chase Burke both walked, then pulled off a double steal to give the Jimmies runners at second and third.
  • Ryan Muizelaar grounded out to third, but Alva scored and Burke moved up to third on the play. Jordan Singleton flew out to right to drive in Burke with the sacrifice fly.
  • Doane tied the game with a single run in each of the first two innings, and the score remained 2-2 until the top of the fifth.
  • With one out in the fifth, Singleton's second sacrifice fly of the game brought in Riki Okamoto for a 3-2 Jimmie lead.
  • The Tigers answered in the bottom half of the inning with five runs, including a bases-loaded triple that extended their lead to 7-3.
  • Burke and Okamoto had UJ's two hits, while Burke, Alva, and Jett Nelson each stole a base.
  • Jack Howard (3-2) took the loss after giving up six runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked one.

  • UJ is scheduled to host Northwestern (Iowa) in a doubleheader Saturday, April 6, beginning at 2 p.m.
