The Rollie Greeno Award for outstanding commitment in the field of education and coaching was established in 1994 by the Jimmie Booster Club to honor Coach Greeno's many years of dedicated service as an instructor and coach at the University of Jamestown. The award honors individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to youth through their careers in the education and/or coaching professions.
Dave Hollenbeck ('95) has been selected as the 2016 winner of the award.
Hollenbeck, originally from Edgemont, S.D., was a member of the Jimmie men's basketball team during the 1992-1993 and 1993-94 seasons before spending the 1994-1996 seasons as a men's basketball assistant coach for the Jimmies under Jerry Meyer.
In the fall of 1996, Hollenbeck became the head coach at St. Thomas More High School in Rapid City, S.D., and over the past 20 seasons has compiled an overall record of 367-108. His teams have reached the State Class A tournament 10 out of the last 13 years, and reached the final four in nine of those trips. Hollenbeck has coached four state championship teams, reaching the championship game six times,
St. Thomas More has produced more Mr. Basketball South Dakota recipients than any other program in any class since 2005. The three recipents of the award ties them for the most all-time in South Dakota even though St. Thomas More has been playing basketball for only 25 years. Since 2005, St. Thomas More has developed the most college basketball players of any school, and have won the Black Hills Conference title 14 of the last 16 years. Seventy-eight players have earned All-Conference selections since 1996-97. Hollenbeck's student athletes have also enjoyed success in the classroom. Of the 74 current St. Thomas More boys basketball alumni, one out of five have scored 30 or higher on the ACT exam.
He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association. Dave and his wife Denise have four boys--Connor (15), Caleb (12), Caden (6), and Colton (3).
"I have fond memories of playing basketball at Jamestown College," said Hollenbeck, "none more memorable than playing on the first team in Jamestown College men's basketball history to make it to the national tournament in Nampa, Idaho, my senior season. I truly owe all of my current success to the community of Jamestown and the University for giving me the tools and knowledge to help my student athletes to be competitiive at St. Thomas More High School. Rollie Greeno was the most successful coach I've been around in my lifetime. I am honored to receive this award."
Hollenbeck will be honored during the Hall of Fame breakfast at 9:00 am on Saturday, October 8th in the Reiland Fine Arts Center, along with Hall of Fame inductees Kelli "Dewey" Duvall, Erica Mois, and the 1984 Jimmie football team.
