With two tough games looming Thursday, a sweep was needed Tuesday for the Jimmie baseball team.

Thanks to a breakout day offensively, they got it.

Jamestown College rallied from an 8-1 hole to win the opener and then held on in Game 2 to sweep Mount Marty of Yankton, S.D., 9-8 and 9-7 in Tucson, Ariz.

The Jimmies pounded out 27 hits on the day, their best offensive showing of the season as they improved to 7-4.

"Offensively we seemed to come to life and be more consistent today," JC coach Tom Hager said. "We got contributions from a lot of people in our lineup. This was a good day and we need to build on it."

The Jimmies get their lone day off during the trip today. Several of them will take in the Mariners/Royals spring training game in Surprise, Ariz.

When they return to action Thursday No. 16 Lubbock Christian and Wayland Baptist, both of Texas, await.

"We're going to face some big boys," Hager said.

JC 9, Mount Marty 8

The Jimmies trailed 8-1 in the opener to Mount Marty, but Andy Young's go-ahead double capped a 4-run bottom of the sixth to cap the comeback.

Matt Achter continued his hot hitting, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Nico Moreno added three hits, while Young and Erik Peterson had two each.

"Our guys showed some guts and resiliency to get that win," Hager said. "It was a total team effort offensively. We had a number of good at bats up and down the lineup."

Relievers Gaige Dunn, Kyle Shaikoski and Kacy Gardner stabilized the game after they fell down 8-1. Shaikoski got the win and Gardner the save.

JC 9, Mount Marty 7

The tables were turned in the nightcap as the Jimmies led 9-3 after four innings.

Mount Marty rallied, but reliever Chris Combo closed it down for his second save in as many days.

"I was happy with how we were able to come out and continue to pile up runs," Hager said. "We carried it over and were able to get out to a nice lead."

Mitch Steven belted a 2-run home run in the top of the second inning, the Jimmies' first long ball of the season. Achter had two more hits, giving him six on the day. Moreno added two for a total of five. Nolan Skowronek and Jonathan Minchella added two apiece.

Ben Mortenson took over on the mound in the fifth and got the win.
