Jon Hegerle begins his 16th season as Jimmie volleyball head coach in 2024.

In 2022, in what was to be a “rebuilding year,” the Jimmies exceeded all expectations advancing to their 4th straight NAIA Semifinal en route to the programs first ever NAIA National Title. The 2022 storybook season marked the first ever NAIA Team Championship in the University of Jamestown’s 139-year history. Along the way the Jimmies earned their 3rd consecutive GPAC Championship and 4th consecutive GPAC Tournament Championship. UJ won 30 games for the fourth consecutive season and Hegerle was named the GPAC Coach of the year for the 3rd time along with his 2nd National Coach of the Year award (2020 and 2022).

The Jimmies started the 2022 as the #2 team in the nation and after losing their opening match of the year against Eastern Oregon, went on a 19-game winning streak. On October 8, the Jimmies ended their 41-game win streak at the Harold Newman Arena when they lost to #3 Midland in 5 sets. From that point on, the Jimmies won their next 18 matches losing only 11 total sets culminating in a 5-set win over Midland in the Semi-Final match and a 5-set win over Corban University in the National Championship.

For the teams accomplishments the Jimmies earned numerous post-season honors. Coach Hegerle was chosen by the coaches as the Conference, NAIA National Tournament and NAIA National Coach of the Year. Lexi Olson was named 1st Team All-Conference and NAIA All-American Honorable Mention. Anna Holen earned 1st Team All-Conference, National Tournament MVP and her 3rd NAIA 1st Team All-American honor. Ellie Holen was named the GPAC Defender of the Year, the National Tournament Defender of the Tournament and NAIA National Defender of the Year. Kalli Hegerle was chosen as the GPAC Player of the Year, National Tournament All-Tournament Team, and the NAIA National Player of the Year.

During Hegerle’s 14 years at the helm of the Jimmie Volleyball program, the team has compiled an impressive 372-116 (.776) record. Stressing faith, servant leadership, funda­mentals, and a team-first attitude, his teams have earned eight conference championships, eight NAIA National Tournament Participants, and produced 80 All-Conference selections, 5 Conference Player of the Year selections, 2 Conference Senior of the Year selections, 1 Conference Setter of the Year selection, 3 Conference Defensive Player of the Year selections, 11 AVCA Honorable Mention All-Americans, 5 AVCA 3rd Team All-Americans, 5 AVCA 2nd Team All-Americans, 5 AVCA 1st Team All-Americans, 1 COSIDA 1st Team All-American and 38 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

Coach Hegerle came to University of James­town from Marshall, Minn., where he was the top assistant volleyball coach and social studies teacher at Marshall High School from 2003-2008. Marshall posted a volleyball record of 166-31 and reached the state tournament each year during Hegerle’s six years on the coaching staff, finishing as runners-up in 2005 and 2008 and state champions in 2004 and 2007. He was named MN State Class AA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2008.

A 25-year member of the Midwest Volleyball Instructors staff, Hegerle has directed and coached camps across the upper Midwest. He has also coached at Apple Valley, Lakev­ille North and Eastview High Schools, all in Minnesota.

He holds a degree in sociology from St. Olaf and a degree in education from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Hegerle also is the director of the Jamestown Juniors program as well as director of the Univer­sity of Jamestown summer camps which are recognized as leaders in player and skill development in the area. Jon’s wife Sara is the head volleyball coach at Jamestown High School, and they have three daughters: Josie (27), Grace (20) and Edie (17) and three grandkids.
