Salt Lake City, Utah – The University of Jamestown men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season Saturday afternoon to the Westminster Griffins by a score of 4-0.
The Jimmies will head back home with a 0-1-3 record. Westminster gets their first win of the season and is now 1-0-3.
Nuutti Norhomaa had an off target shot in the first minute of the game, but it was all Griffins for a period after that.
Valon Ismaili was plenty busy as Westminster attempted six shots in the next 15 minutes, three which were on net, and two that hit the crossbar.
After their shot barrage, the Griffins had a couple of corner kicks that the Jimmies did not allow any shots on.
Sohiab Bouika el Haddad Kaddour had another Jamestown shot in the 37
th minute, this one missing the net as well.
Westminster got on the board in the 39
th minute with Owen Gallo finding Max Edwards for the tally and a 1-0 advantage by the home team.
The first period ended with the Griffins winning shots 7-2 while the Jimmies were still seeking their first shot on goal. Westminster had two corner kick chances while Jamestown had one.
The hosts bombarded Ismaili again to begin the second half, but the UJ goalkeeper stood his ground, making two more saves.
Kayden Zenk had a shot in the 54
th minute, but the Jimmies conceded again in the 56
th minute as the Griffins doubled their lead.
Scoring opportunities were highly limited for UJ, and just a
Finley Comstock shot in the 65
th minute was the only shot that needed to be stopped by Westminster netminder Oliver Olsen.
Ismaili made five more saves after the second Griffins goal, but Westminster put the game out of reach with a goal in the 84
th minute, then added even more insurance in with another in the 87
th minute as UJ was blanked 4-0 in Salt Lake City.
Zenk led the Jimmies with two shot attempts while Ismaili made 10 saves for the third-straight game. Total shots ended 20-5 Griffins while shots on net were 15-1. Jamestown had only one corner kick in the contest while Westminster had five.
UJ will look to get back on track as they play at St. Cloud State University on Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m.
