Men's Soccer Game Preview: Jimmies Round Out Road Trip at Northern Michigan Saturday

Marquette, Mich. – Coming off a win against St. Cloud State, the University of Jamestown men's soccer team is set to play the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday, September 12 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to round out a four-game road swing.

"Northern Michigan is a good side," said head coach Justin Gilfert. "We'll take a look at how they play and see what we can do to be successful and make them make some mistakes."

The Teams

The UJ men's soccer team heads into this contest at an even .500 at 1-1-3. Jamestown got into the win column earlier in the week as they took down the St. Cloud State Huskies 2-0 Wednesday in Minnesota. Nuutti Norhomaa scored in the 10th minute off a pass from Saif Ghodhbani on a free kick, then Norhomaa tacked on his second goal of the night in the 84th minute, this assisted by Andrei Filho. Valon Ismaili earned his second shutout of the season with four saves in the win.

Norhomaa has accounted for half the Jamestown goals scored on the season as the freshman from Finland has found the back of the net three times now. Ghodhbani has a team-high two assists while Filho has three points from a goal plus a helper. Ismaili holds a 1.60 goals-against average and a .840 save percentage in his five games thus far with two clean sheets.

Northern Michigan sits at 2-2 on the young season with today's matchup being their last game before Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play begins. The Wildcats have taken down Northwood University and Lake Erie College and their two losses are to ranked teams in No. 25 Tiffin University, and No. 6 Saginaw Valley State University. Most recently, against SVSU, Luca Rosen tied the game 1-1 in the 22nd minute, but three unanswered goals by Saginaw Valley sunk the Wildcats 4-1 on the road. Northern Michigan goalkeeper Asaf Kristal had four saves and four goals allowed. Shots on goal were 8-3 in favor of SVSU.

The Wildcats are arguably the toughest opponent that Jamestown will play up to this point. In 2025, the Wildcats went 9-5-6 and 6-4-2 in the GLIAC. They finished in third place in the conference but won the GLIAC tournament with a 1-0 shutout against Saginaw Valley to get a bid into the NCAA Tournament. This was one of the greatest stories in D-II men's soccer as NMU finished in last place in the conference the previous season. NMU is 6-1-3 at home dating back to last season.

"Being the reigning GLIAC conference champions shows why they're as good as they are," Gilfert noted. "We'll need to come out firing on all cylinders and put together a top performance."

Luca Rosen has established himself as one of the top players in the GLIAC, with four goals and an assist so far. The British senior scored the game-winning goal against both Northwood and Lake Erie, and leads the conference in goals, shots attempted per game, and shots on goal per game. Noah Preston-Watkins is right behind Rosen with two goals. In between the pipes, Kristal has a .724 save percentage and 2.04 goals-against average to go along with a conference-high 21 saves on the season.

There has not been a recorded time in which Jamestown and Northern Michigan have played each other in men's soccer.
