Jimmies outhit Wildcats but drop Friday doubleheader

WAYNE, Neb. – The University of Jamestown baseball team outhit Wayne State College 19-13 in Friday's doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Complex, but the Wildcats were the winners on the scoreboard, defeating the Jimmies 4-2 and 6-5.

Game One Summary
Jamestown struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After Jacob Thomas singled down the right-field line, Melvin Maldonado ripped an RBI double to right-center, scoring Thomas for an unearned run.

The Jimmies held the lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when WSC broke through for two runs. Max Heard delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Cam Madsen, and Paul Schuyler followed with a sacrifice bunt that brought home Nate Cunningham, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage.

WSC added a pair of crucial insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Schuyler hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score pinch-runner Brayden Chaney, and Korey Cozad immediately followed with an RBI double to right-center to score Cunningham, extending the lead to 4-1.

The Jimmies mounted a rally in their final at-bat in the top of the seventh. Thomas singled to third base, and Maldonado laced his second double of the game down the left-field line to put runners at second and third. Pinch-hitter Julian Romero drove in Thomas with a groundout to shortstop, cutting the deficit to 4-2. However, the comeback bid fell short when pinch-hitter Mason Shea drew a walk but was subsequently caught stealing to end the game.

Game Two Summary
UJ staged a dramatic four-run rally in the eighth inning to take a late lead, but WSC responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to steal a 6-5 victory.

The loss drops the Jimmies' record to 13-35 overall and 8-27 in the NSIC, while Wayne State improves to 28-21 overall and 20-16 in conference play.

After two scoreless innings, Jamestown struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as Grant Chapman came home on a wild pitch. Wayne State immediately answered, pushing two runs across in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 advantage. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 3-1.

The game remained 3-1 until the top of the eighth inning, when the Jimmies' offense erupted. Jamestown capitalized on two Wayne State errors, generating four runs on two hits and a pair of bases-loaded walks to Melvin Maldonado and Mason Shea helped flip the script and give UJ a 5-3 lead.

However, the Wildcats mounted a comeback of their own in the bottom of the eighth. After Gabe Monosmith and Nate Cunningham drew walks, pinch-runner Brayden Chaney and Cunningham successfully executed a double steal to put both runners in scoring position. Paul Schuyler delivered the tying blow with a two-run double through the left side, bringing home both Cunningham and Chaney to make it 5-5. Following a Jamestown pitching change, Korey Cozad laced an RBI single to left field to score Schuyler and give Wayne State a 6-5 lead.

Jamestown was held scoreless in the top of the ninth, cementing the 6-5 final score.
