Jimmies swept by USF

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Jamestown baseball team dropped a pair of games on Wednesday to the University of Sioux Falls at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Game One Summary
Sioux Falls took control of the game immediately, striking for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Dominic Vogel led off with a single and later scored when William Edwards doubled to right field, aided by a throwing error. Brady Schafer then delivered an RBI single to score Edwards. After a walk and another single, Mitch Iliff crossed the plate on a fielding error by the Jamestown left fielder, and
Cullen Verville capped the inning with an RBI single to right field to put the Cougars up 4-0.

Jamestown got on the board in the top of the third inning when Dallas Cummins launched a solo home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

The Cougars answered in the bottom of the fourth inning. Vogel hit a one-out single to second base, and Edwards immediately followed with his second double of the game to bring Vogel home, extending the lead to 5-1.

The Jimmies manufactured a run in the top of the fifth. Pinch-hitter Melvin Maldonado ripped a leadoff double to left-center and advanced to third on a groundout by Cummins. Mathieu Morin then delivered an RBI groundout to second base, scoring Maldonado to make it 5-2.

Sioux Falls added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Vogel singled and later scored on an RBI single up the middle by Schafer to give the Cougars a 6-2 advantage.

Jamestown attempted a final rally in the top of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Langdyn Cummins tripled down the right-field line and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Maldonado. Pinch-hitter Frankie Malagon followed with a single, but the Jimmies could not extend the rally as the next two batters were retired to end the game.

Game Two Summary
The Cougars (24-22, 20-13 NSIC) utilized a potent offensive attack in game two, generating 14 hits and hitting two home runs to defeat the Jimmies (13-33, 8-25 NSIC) 11-1 in seven innings.

Jamestown struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jett Nelson hit a one-out single to right field and immediately stole second base. Jacob Thomas followed with an RBI single to left field, bringing Nelson home to give the Jimmies the early advantage.

Sioux Falls answered quickly with two runs in the bottom of the first. Dominic Vogel scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, and Drew Miller gave the Cougars the lead with an RBI single.

The Cougars added to their lead in the second inning when Nolan Drossel lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Cullen Verville, making it 3-1.

In the bottom of the third, Sioux Falls created more separation. After Mitch Iliff singled, Miller launched a two-run home run to left field to extend the lead to 5-1.

The offensive surge for the Cougars continued in the fifth inning. Brady Schafer delivered an RBI single up the middle, which was soon followed by a two-run home run to left field by Justin Johnson, pushing the Sioux Falls advantage to 8-1.

Sioux Falls ended the game in the bottom of the seventh inning by pushing three runs across the plate. Pinch-hitter Colin Gibson drew a bases-loaded walk to score Jhett Peterson. Vogel then ripped an RBI single down the right-field line to score Verville, and pinch-hitter Carson Jager finalized the 11-1 score with a walk-off RBI single through the right side.
