MINNETONKA, Minn. – The University of Jamestown baseball team split a doubleheader with Minnesota Duluth on Sunday at Minnetonka Veterans Field. The Jimmies were held scoreless in the opener, falling 6-0, before their offense exploded in game two to secure a 10-8 victory. The two teams finished their series on Monday, with UMD rallying for a 5-4 win.
Game 1: Minnesota Duluth 6, Jamestown 0
In the first game of the day, the Jimmies' bats were stifled by Minnesota Duluth starter Henry Wilkinson, who pitched a complete-game shutout. Wilkinson allowed just five hits and no walks while striking out four batters over seven innings of work.
The Bulldogs took control of the game early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Troy Lynch opened the scoring with an RBI single to right field, Nikhil Kandi followed with an RBI double, and Logan Myers capped the inning with an RBI groundout.
Minnesota Duluth doubled their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Michael Gabbard hit an RBI single to left field, and a subsequent single by Hayden Anthony led to two more runs crossing the plate following a Jamestown fielding error in right field.
Jett Nelson paced the Jamestown offense with a pair of hits, including a first-inning single. Payton Hochhalter (0-2) took the loss on the mound for the Jimmies, throwing six innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on ten hits with three strikeouts.
Game 2: Jamestown 10, Minnesota Duluth 8
Jamestown's offense flipped the script in the second game, racking up 14 hits and scoring in five different innings to earn a 10-8 win.
The Jimmies jumped out to an early advantage, scoring two runs in the first inning, one in the second, and two in the third. A massive four-run surge in the seventh inning provided the decisive cushion.
Jett Nelson was the catalyst for the Jimmie lineup, finishing 4-for-5 at the plate, scoring three runs, and contributed a line-drive RBI double to right field in the eighth inning that scored Trayson Kostial. Melvin Maldonado was also a major contributor, driving in three runs on the day along with three hits. Jacob Thomas added a pair of hits, as did Adrian Warcken and Benney Benitez.
Jamestown's two through five hitters in the lineup combined to bat 11-for-20 with five runs scored, and six RBI.
Minnesota Duluth attempted a late comeback, scoring three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and another in the eighth on an RBI double from Troy Lynch, but the Jamestown defense held on to secure the victory and close the doubleheader with a win.
Elias Harris (4-1) was the winning pitcher for UJ, pitching the final 3 ? innings, giving up a run on three hits, striking out two.
Monday's Game Summary
Jamestown built a steady 4-0 lead behind a dominant start from pitcher Isaac Hanson, who struck out seven batters over seven innings of work.
Trayson Kostial opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, launching a solo home run to left field to give the Jimmies a 1-0 edge. The Jimmies extended their lead in the third inning when Jacob Thomas delivered an RBI single to center field to score Mathieu Morin. Melvin Maldonado immediately followed with an RBI single of his own to score Jett Nelson, pushing the advantage to 3-0.
Adrian Warcken padded the Jimmies' lead with a solo home run to left field in the top of the seventh, giving Jamestown a 4-0 cushion.
Minnesota Duluth finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh when Thomas Hanson tripled to center field, scoring Henry Bushey to make it a 4-1 game.
The Bulldogs then completed their comeback with a massive four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth. After an RBI single by Troy Lynch cut the deficit to 4-2, Garrett Stauffacher laced a two-run double to center field off reliever Beckett Stimpson to tie the game. Following a hit batsman and a pitching change, Hanson delivered the decisive blow for the Bulldogs, hitting an RBI double down the left-field line to score Stauffacher and give Minnesota Duluth a 5-4 lead.
UJ went down in order in the top of the ninth against UMD reliever Caden Klebba to end the game.
