CHICAGO, Ill. — The University of Jamestown men's volleyball team fell in four sets to Roosevelt University on Friday evening at the Goodman Center.
The Jimmies battled throughout the match but ultimately dropped the match by scores of 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, and 25-16.
Set-by-set highlights
Set 1 (Roosevelt 25, Jamestown 22):
Jamestown and Roosevelt traded points early, with neither side able to create separation through the opening stretch. Kills from Lucas Soeldner and Cohen Johnson helped the Jimmies stay level, while a pair of service aces from Roosevelt pushed the Lakers ahead 13-10 midway through the set. Jamestown responded with a late push, using kills from Joshua Crowley and Ethan Carroll to tie the set at 22-22. However, Roosevelt closed on a 3-0 run, capitalising on key attacking opportunities to secure the opening frame.
Set 2 (Roosevelt 25, Jamestown 18):
Roosevelt carried its momentum into the second set, jumping out to an early lead behind efficient offensive play. The Lakers extended their advantage to 12-7 before Jamestown answered with a short run sparked by Amery Roberts and Crowley. Despite the response, Roosevelt regained control with a decisive mid-set surge, stretching the lead to 19-13. The Jimmies continued to compete, but a late run by the Lakers sealed the set and a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3 (Jamestown 25, Roosevelt 21):
Jamestown delivered its strongest performance of the match in the third set, opening with a more aggressive offensive approach. Kills from Soeldner and Roberts, along with improved passing, helped the Jimmies build an early advantage. After Roosevelt evened the score midway through the set, Jamestown responded with a key run to regain control. A service ace and multiple late kills from Roberts pushed the Jimmies ahead, and they closed out the set with composure to extend the match.
Set 4 (Roosevelt 25, Jamestown 16):
Roosevelt quickly took control of the fourth set, using a strong service run and consistent blocking at the net to build an early 8-3 lead. The Lakers continued to apply pressure, extending the margin to 15-8 midway through the frame. Jamestown looked to rally behind late kills from Crowley and Soeldner, but Roosevelt maintained its rhythm offensively and closed out the match comfortably.
Statistical leaders
Lucas Soeldner led the Jimmies with 12 kills and three service aces. Cohen Johnson added eight kills on an efficient .357 hitting percentage, while Ethan Carroll contributed four kills and two aces. Joshua Crowley recorded five kills and eight digs, while Amery Roberts added six kills and contributed across the rotation. At setter, Rowan Shaughnessy finished with 31 assists, helping guide Jamestown to 41 total kills. Defensively, Jackson Holmes anchored the back row with five digs, while Cristian Sotelo added seven digs.
