Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Jimmies battle in tight match-up against Ottawa University

OTTAWA, Kan. – The University of Jamestown men's volleyball team went point-for-point with Ottawa through much of Tuesday afternoon's neutral-site matchup at Lynn Farrell Arena, but the Braves capitalised late in each set to secure a 3-0 victory (27-25, 26-24, 25-19).

Jamestown delivered one of its more efficient offensive performances of the season, finishing with 46 kills and hitting .303 as a team. The Jimmies controlled stretches of both the first and second sets and forced Ottawa into extended rallies, but the Braves executed in key moments down the stretch to take control of the match.

The opening set set the tone for the afternoon, as Jamestown jumped out to an early 9-5 lead behind aggressive serving and steady side-out play. Back-to-back service aces from Chase Hawkinson gave the Jimmies early momentum and forced Ottawa to regroup. Offensively, Jamestown spread the ball effectively with Rowan Shaughnessy directing the attack, finding Ethan Carroll, Cohen Johnson, and Ladarius Williams in rhythm. The set remained tight throughout, with neither team able to separate by more than a few points. As the score climbed into the mid-20s, the intensity increased on both sides. Jamestown fought off multiple runs and stayed composed under pressure, but Ottawa produced a late surge and edged out the final points to escape with a 27-25 win.

The Jimmies responded confidently in the second frame, putting together one of their cleanest stretches of play. Jamestown hit .400 in the set and again built a lead midway through, using balanced scoring and disciplined defense to stay in front. Williams and Carroll continued to be reliable options in transition, while Amery Roberts provided a spark offensively. Ottawa answered with a run of its own, using sustained rallies and transition swings to level the score. Down the stretch, the teams traded points in a back-and-forth battle that once again extended beyond 24 points. Jamestown had opportunities to push the match to a tie, but Ottawa found another timely sequence late, taking the set 26-24 to move ahead 2-0.

Looking to force a fourth set, the Jimmies battled early in the third and stayed within reach through the opening exchanges. Jamestown continued to score efficiently and remained aggressive at the net, but Ottawa gained separation midway through the frame behind consistent serving pressure and execution in transition. The Braves maintained their advantage late, and despite continued effort from the Jimmies, closed out the match with a 25-19 decision.

Williams led Jamestown with 12 kills on a .385 hitting percentage, while Carroll and Roberts each added nine. Shaughnessy anchored the offense with 38 assists as the Jimmies surpassed the .300 hitting mark for the match. Defensively, Jamestown tallied 45 digs, led by Treyton Kaul (8) and Williams (8), and added three service aces.

GAME TWO

The University of Jamestown men's volleyball team delivered a strong all-around performance Tuesday afternoon, defeating Hastings in straight sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-23) behind a balanced offensive effort and timely execution late in each set.

Jamestown established its rhythm early in the opening set, with Chase Hawkinson, Ladarius Williams, and Joshua Crowley helping the Jimmies trade points with Hastings through the early rallies. The teams remained tightly matched throughout much of the set, with neither side able to create significant separation. As the score moved into the later stages, Jamestown began to find momentum through consistent offense and key defensive stops. A kill from Ethan Carroll pushed the Jimmies to set point before Rowan Shaughnessy sealed the frame with a service ace, giving Jamestown the 25-22 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set followed a similar pattern as both teams exchanged points through the opening stretch. Jamestown leaned on its outside hitters to maintain pressure, with Hawkinson and Williams continuing to find success in transition. Midway through the set, Hastings briefly gained momentum and built a small advantage, but the Jimmies responded with a decisive run sparked by strong serving and aggressive play at the net. Jamestown regained control and maintained the lead through the closing rallies. A kill from Crowley helped push the Jimmies toward set point before another Hastings service error secured the second set 25-22.

Looking to close out the match in the third, Jamestown once again faced a determined Hastings squad that kept the score tight throughout the set. The teams traded points early, with Cohen Johnson and Hawkinson contributing key kills to keep the Jimmies in front. Hastings briefly moved ahead midway through the set, but Jamestown responded with a strong run led by Hawkinson and Williams to reclaim the lead. The set remained competitive down the stretch as Hastings attempted to force a fourth frame, but Jamestown stayed composed in the final rallies. A late kill from Williams secured the final point of the match, giving the Jimmies the 25-23 win and completing the three-set sweep.

Offensively, Jamestown was led by Hawkinson, who produced several key kills throughout the match, while Williams and Carroll added consistent scoring at the net. Shaughnessy orchestrated the attack effectively from the setter position, distributing the ball across multiple options and keeping the Hastings defense off balance.

Jamestown will return to action on March 6, traveling to Kansas City, Missouri to face Rockhurst University.
