Jimmies edged by UMC in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of Jamestown women's tennis team suffered a close 4-3 defeat to Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, March 28, 2026, in Grand Forks, N.D..

The result puts Jamestown at 3-5 overall and 3-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), while Minnesota Crookston stands at 7-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Minnesota Crookston captured the early momentum by securing the doubles point with wins on two of the three courts.

The Jimmies found success at the No. 1 doubles spot, where the pairing of Julie van Zeijl and Bodil van Zeijl posted a convincing 6-2 victory over Danil De Lucas Rivera and Terez Drasilova.

However, the Golden Eagles secured the overall team point with matching 6-2 scores at the other flights. At No. 2 doubles, Asli Oktay and Abril Manas Hernandez defeated Sydney Friesen and Laia Vallespi. Meanwhile, Kavya SIngh and Nadia Cases Mundet bested Mariia Sharandachenko and Anna Sharandachenko at the No. 3 position.

Jamestown fought back during singles action, dominating the top half of the lineup by winning flights one through three.

Julie van Zeijl claimed a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Daniela de Lucas Rivera 6-1, 6-3. Bodil van Zeijl followed suit at No. 2 singles, topping Asli Oktay 6-1, 6-4. At the No. 3 flight, Mariia Sharandachenko secured a win via opponent retirement against Nadia Cases Mundet after a grueling battle that was tied 6-4, 4-6, 5-5.

Despite the strong showing at the top, Minnesota Crookston clinched the dual by sweeping the bottom three singles matches. At No. 4 singles, Terez Drasilova defeated Anna Sharandachenko 7-6, 6-1. Kavya SIngh rallied for a three-set victory over Laia Vallespi at No. 5 singles, winning 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. At the No. 6 spot, Abril Manas Hernandez defeated Sydney Friesen 6-0, 6-1.

The Jimmies face University of Mary in Grand Forks on Saturday beginning at 4:30 p.m.
