Jamestown, N.D—The University of Jamestown softball team opened their 2026 season in dominant fashion, securing a doubleheader sweep over the University of Providence (MT) at home in the Nelson Family Bubble. The Jimmies displayed a potent mix of explosive offense in the opener and gritty, late-inning execution in the nightcap.
Game 1: Jamestown 12, Providence 2 (5 Innings)
The Jimmies wasted no time finding their rhythm in the season opener, utilizing a massive six-run second inning to pull away early.
The Lead: Jamestown finished with 12 runs on 13 hits to secure a run-rule victory in five innings.
The Bats: Sydney Grendler had a career day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and 4 RBIs. Maddie Spaeth and Madelyn Webb also contributed multi-hit efforts, each driving in a pair of runs.
The Circle: Hope Ransome earned the win, striking out five batters over four innings of work while allowing only two runs.
The Turning Point: After Providence took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Jimmies responded with one in the bottom half before exploding for six runs in the second, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Sydney Grendler.
Game 2: Jamestown 4, Providence 3
The second game was a much tighter affair, requiring a seventh-inning comeback to complete the sweep.
The Lead: A walk-off RBI single by Lauren Weigel in the bottom of the seventh inning sealed the 4-3 victory for the Jimmies.
The Circle: Aubrey Quern provided stellar relief, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings and striking out three to keep the Jimmies within striking distance. Maddie Hairgrove was credited with the win.
The Bats: Kylie Yanzuk was a vital spark, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Amanda Burch also added a crucial RBI double in the fourth.
The Turning Point: Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Jimmies rallied to tie the game. Kylie Yanzuk drove in a run with a single, and Kate Geiszler brought home the tying run with a sacrifice fly. In the seventh, Trinity Gregg walked and eventually scored the winning run on Lauren Weigel's clutch base hit.
