COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Jamestown baseball team concluded its weekend series against UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday, falling 16-7 at Mountain Lion Park.
In a game that featured 23 combined hits and five home runs, the Jimmies (0-4) held a 5-3 lead midway through the contest before the Mountain Lions (7-3) exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.
UJ struck first in the opening frame when
Adrian Warcken singled up the middle to drive in
Mathieu Morin, who had reached on an error to start the game. After UCCS tied it in the second,
Trayson Kostial regained the lead for the Jimmies in the top of the third with a solo home run to right-center.
The offense continued to click for Jamestown in the fourth.

Ben Patton, and Morin followed with an RBI double down the left-field line to extend the lead to 4-2.
After UCCS cut the deficit to one on a solo home run by James Harbison, the Jimmies pushed their lead back to 5-3 in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout by pinch-hitter
Ben Swennumson.
The momentum swung decisively in the bottom of the fifth. The Mountain Lions sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring 11 runs on five hits and four walks. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam from Harbison—his second homer of the day—and two-run hits from Cayden Gonzalez, Tyler Genrich, and Nolan Oliver.
Mason Shea hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to cut the score to 14-6, but UCCS added insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings to secure the 16-7 victory.
Morin led the Jimmie offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, with an RBI and a run scored. He also walked and stole a base. Kostial scored twice and walked in addition to his solo home run.
Jamestown starter
Nolan McCaffery pitched three innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four.
Ryan Morales took the loss, being charged with four runs in the pivotal fifth inning.
For UCCS, Benjamin Ruckman earned the win in relief, tossing two innings and allowing one run. Joshua Zotto closed out the game with three innings of one-run ball to earn the save.
The Jimmies open a four-game series against Minnesota State University on Friday, February 20.
