Jimmies open season at UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Jamestown baseball team opened its 2026 season on Friday afternoon, falling 11-4 to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) at Mountain Lion Park.

The host Mountain Lions (4-3) used a pair of big innings early to take control, scoring six runs in the first and four in the second to build a commanding lead. Despite a mid-game rally from the Jimmies (0-1), the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

UCCS jumped out to a quick start in the bottom of the first inning. After an RBI fielder's choice and an RBI double by Brendan Killeen, Tyler Buchman capped the inning with a grand slam to right field, putting the hosts up 6-0.

Jamestown got on the board in the top of the second when Jacob Thomas singled to left field, driving in Trayson Kostial, who had doubled earlier in the inning. However, the Mountain Lions responded immediately in the bottom half, plating four more runs on homers by Bryce Peterson and Trevor Dale, extending their lead to 10-1.

The Jimmies offense came alive again in the fourth inning, scoring three times to cut into the deficit. Adrian Warcken drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, and Benney Benitez followed with an RBI fielder's choice. A wild pitch later in the inning allowed Bode Joyner to score, making it a 10-4 game.

Kostial led the Jimmies at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Thomas finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

Luke Zimmer (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Jamestown, pitching four innings and allowing 10 runs on eight hits.

Isaac Hanson provided solid relief for the Jimmies, tossing 3.1 innings and allowing just one run on two hits while striking out two.

For UCCS, Peterson went 4-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, while Buchman drove in four runs with his first-inning grand slam.

The Jimmies take on UCCS in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. Central.
