Sioux Falls, S.D. – Riley Aldrich tallied her first goal and
Taylor Musser made 13 saves on 14 shots faced as the University of Jamestown women's soccer team survived an onslaught of from the University of Sioux Falls in a 1-1 draw Friday night at Bob Young Field.
The Jimmies record now sits at 4-4-2 and 4-2-1 in the NSIC after their first draw in conference play. The Cougars get to 3-3-4 and 1-2-4 in the Northern Sun.
The Jimmies were playing from behind in this early into this one. In the eighth minute, the Cougars got their first crack on a corner kick. Martina Krattley sent the ball towards the net, and the shot curved in up and above the head of Musser for the game's first goal.
Jamestown struggled to find space for shots throughout the first half. Sioux Falls had a few more shots placed on net sprinkled throughout the opening 45 minutes, until
Julliet Lopez got free with a shot attempt wide around 20 yards out in the 38
th minute.
20 seconds later, the Jimmies were awarded a corner kick and capitalized. On the kick by Lopez,
Riley Aldrich was camping around the penalty hash marker. The kick went right to her, and Aldrich used her 6'0" frame to leap above everyone else, getting a head on the ball and sending it top left out of the reach of netminder Morgan Jost for the 1-1 tie.
The Jimmies pressured a few minutes after Aldrich's equalizer, and
Hillary Hanari got a shot off in the 42
nd minute with Jost made a save on.
The first period ended with the score at 1-1, shots 6-4 in favor of the home team, and shots on goal 4-2 Cougars. Each team had one corner kick in the first half.
The ball was back in the Jamestown end for the majority of the second half. The Jimmies watched the Cougars take three shots in the first 11 minutes, then Musser got busy with four saves between the 57
th and 68
th minutes.
Lopez had the first Jamestown shot in the second half at the 79
th minute. In the closing minutes, Musser made another save and UJ successfully defended a couple of corner kicks.
Bailey Fox logged a shot with 1:35 left to play with this missing wide to the right. The game concluded with a 1-1 draw between the two Dakota squads.
Aldrich's goal was her first of the sophomore's career while Lopez got her second assist on the season. Musser tied a career high in saves with 13.
Total shots in the contest were 20-6 in favor of the Cougars while shots on goal were lopsided as well at 14-2. The Cougars had five corner kicks while Jamestown had only one.
The Jimmies will return to action on Sunday, October 4 where they will play at Southwest Minnesota State University over in Marshall at 1 p.m.
