Burnaby, B.C. - The University of Jamestown men's soccer team did not exactly have their best stuff in a 9-0 loss at Simon Fraser University Saturday afternoon.
The Jimmies fall to 1-7-3 on the season while the Red Leafs improve to 5-2-5.
SFU applied quite a bit of pressure early in the game, and it payed off in the 17th minute. A deep throw-in into the box was initially cleared, but Kundalini Bien-Aimé Dominique took a shot from just outside the UJ 18 that was deflected by a Jamestown defender and out of the reach of Valon Ismaili for the first goal.
SFU continued to have quite a bit of fun for the remainder of the half, scoring four more times as the Jimmies struggled generating any offense whatsoever.
The first half wrapped up with the home team ahead 5-0, posting 18 shots and seven on goal. The Jimmies headed into the second half still seeking their first shot attempt.
Jamestown had some nice pressure about 15 minutes into the second half. UJ intercepted a pass in the Simon Fraser defensive zone, then Johannes Kappeler made some moves and took a shot around the top of the Red Leafs 18, but it was blocked away.
The Jimmies, however, did get a corner kick out of this. They elected to go short, and a cross attempt by Joseph Bird was right in front of the net, but goalkeeper Christopher Nicolaisen jumped above everyone to gobble it up.
After SFU scored twice more, the Jimmies had their best look in the 82nd minute. Jamestown pushed up the field after a goal kick, and Finley Comstock had some open space in the middle of the field. The freshman from Vancouver, playing in his homecoming game, launched a shot from about 25 yards out. It was an absolute missile, but unfortunately right at Nicolaisen for the save.
The Red Leafs went on to score another two times in the closing minutes to get the 9-0 win north of the border.
Shots were 32-3 with shots on goal 15-2. Jamestown had one chance on a corner kick while Simon Fraser got five opportunities. Ismaili and Adam Kinnarath each logged three saves.
The Jimmies will next be in action next Saturday, October 17 at Western Oregon University at 7 p.m. PT (9 p.m. CT).
