SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The University of Jamestown football team opened their season on the road Saturday afternoon, falling to the Augustana Vikings by a score of 37-7 at Kirkeby-Over Stadium. The Jimmies faced an uphill battle from the start, as the Vikings' offense dominated the time of possession and capitalized on scoring opportunities early in the game.
Augustana (2-0, 1-0 NSIC) established control early, scoring a passing touchdown in the first quarter and adding another 23 points in the second quarter, including two rushing touchdowns, a field goal, and another passing touchdown, to take a commanding 30-0 lead at the half. The Vikings' ground game was a key factor, with running back Isaiah Huber leading the way with 137 yards and two touchdowns. The Vikings also controlled the clock, holding possession for 37:32 compared to the Jimmies' 22:28.
UJ's offense was unable to get on track for much of the game, finishing with 216 total yards on 59 plays, an average of 3.7 yards per play. The Jimmies' lone scoring drive came in the fourth quarter, as the team marched 80 yards in 8 plays, culminating in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Cole Hentges to Nate Burke to put the Jimmies (0-1, 0-1 NSIC) on the board.
Linebacker Jackson Walters led the team with a game-high nine tackles, including seven solo stops. Hershell Jefferson and Zach Mueller also contributed with eight and six tackles, respectively. The defense also forced and recovered a fumble.
The Jimmies will look to regroup next week as they return home for their home opener on September 13th, at 1:00 PM against Southwest Minnesota State at Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium.
