Softball scores two wins Sunday over VCSU

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Jimmie softball team moved to 11-1 in the North Star Athletic Association, closing its weekend series against Valley City State University with a pair of wins Sunday afternoon, winning 8-0 and 8-3 at the VCSU Softball Complex.

GAME ONE
  • Maddie Spaeth, Kate Geiszler, Lauren Weigel, and Kayla Quintanilla combined for nine of the Jimmies' 11 hits in an 8-0 victory.
  • Quintanilla's first-inning triple scored Weigel and Trinity Gregg for a 2-0 UJ lead, then in the third, Spaeth hit a double to score Weigel, making it 3-0.
  • Sidnie Aasen extended the lead with an RBI single in the fourth, and one inning later, Geiszler's two-run single pushed the advantage to 5-0.
  • Later in the fifth, a double steal by Quintanilla and Geiszler allowed Quintanilla to cross with the sixth Jimmie run.
  • Weigel and Spaeth hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the sixth as the game ended 8-0.
  • Hope Ransome (8-5) pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out three, and needed just 72 pitches to get through six innings.
GAME TWO
  • Jamestown opened a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth, but VCSU hit a solo home run in the fourth and a two-run shot in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3.
  • Tori Olson singled in a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, then later in the inning, Sidnie Aasen and Trinity Gregg each drove in another run to give UJ an 8-3 advantage.
  • Gregg, Lauren Weigel, Amanda Burch, and Sydney Grendler all had two hits in the win.
  • Maddie Hairgrove (9-1) started in the circle and went four innings for the win.
  • Abby Blair pitched two scoreless innings in relief, and Hope Ransome kept the Vikings off the scoreboard in the seventh to finish out the game.

  • Jamestown hosts Bellevue (Neb.) University on Friday in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at Trapper Field.
