Softball finishes Arizona trip with two more wins Sunday

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Jimmie softball team won its final two matchups at the Tucson Invitational Games on Sunday, defeating William Penn (Iowa) University 8-7 and Park-Gilbert 6-4.

JAMESTOWN VS. WILLIAM PENN
  • Four runs over the final two innings provided the difference for the Jimmies in Sunday's first game against William Penn University.
  • After WPU scored once in the top half of the fifth to make it a 4-4 game, Maddie Spaeth and Kayla Quintanilla drove in runs and Quintanilla scored on a steal of home to give Jamestown a three-run cushion.
  • A squeeze bunt by Trinity Gregg one inning later added to the lead as Kaitlin McCartney came home to make it 8-4.
  • WPU made it a one-run game after Laila Smith's three-run homer in the top of the seventh, but Maddie Hairgrove (6-1) retired the next batter for the final out.
  • Gregg, Quintanilla, McCartney, and Tori Olson had two hits.
  • Sydney Grendler drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the fourth.
JAMESTOWN VS. PARK-GILBERT
  • UJ built a 6-1 lead after three innings and went on to a 6-4 victory against the Buccaneers.
  • Kayla Quintanilla's two-run single in the first started the scoring for Jamestown, then Trinity Gregg doubled and Maddie Spaeth singled in the second to make it 4-0.
  • Park got on the board with one run in the bottom of the second, only to have the Jimmies come back with run-scoring hits by Kyie Yanzuk and Trinity Gregg.
  • The Buccaneers put together a three-run rally in the fourth to get within 6-4, but went scoreless over the final three innings.
  • Kaitlin McCartney was 3-for-3 and Gregg was 3-for-4 to lead the Jimmies, who also got two hits from Yanzuk.
  • Laura Ransome (2-0) pitched four scoreless innings in relief and got credit for the win.
UP NEXT
  • Jamestown opens North Star Athletic Association play on March 29 by hosting Mayville State (N.D.) in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
