Softball sweeps Mayville State to open NSAA schedule

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The Jimmie softball team swept its North Star Athletic Association conference opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon, defeating Mayville State 4-0 and 10-2 at the Nelson Family Bubble.

GAME ONE
  • Hope Ransome tied her career high with 10 strikeouts and pitched her first shutout of the season as the Jimmies took game one 4-0.
  • Ransome (4-4) allowed five hits and walked just two in her second complete game of the year.
  • Kayla Quintanilla went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, two of them coming in the Jimmies' three-run third inning.
  • Quintanilla drove in UJ's first run with a two-out single in the bottom of the first, then Lauren Weigel reached on an error to score Trinity Gregg to make it 2-0 in the bottom of the third.
  • Maddie Spaeth followed Weigel with a single to give the Jimmies runners at first and second. With Quintanilla at the plate, Spaeth and Weigel pulled off a double steal, then Quintanilla came through with a single up the middle to plate both runners and push the lead out to 4-0.
  • Jamestown stole six bases in the game, including two by Weigel. Trinity Gregg, Rylie Welk, and Sonya Rodgers joined Spaeth with steals as well.
  • Kaitlin McCartney had UJ's only extra-base hit, a two-out double in the third.
GAME TWO
  • UJ trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the second, but scored the final 10 runs, including six in the bottom of the fifth, for a 10-2 five-inning victory in game two.
  • Amanda Burch drove in the first Jimmie run in the second inning after reaching on a fielder's choice, then Sidnie Aasen tied the game with a two-out double one batter later.
  • Kayla Quintanilla and Kylie Yanzuk each drove in a run in the third to make it 4-2, then in the fifth Jamestown turned up the offense.
  • With the bases loaded and one out, Lauren Weigel beat the throw home on Kylie Yanzuk's ground ball to shortstop.
  • Kaitlin McCartney followed with a single to score Quintanilla and Maddie Spaeth to increase the lead to 7-2.
  • After a Mayville State pitching change, Kate Geiszler's double to left center scored Yanzuk and McCartney, then Amanda Burch doubled down the left field line to bring in Geiszler, giving the Jimmies a 10-2 run rule victory.
  • Abby Blair improved to 6-4 with the victory, pitching five innings and allowing two unearned runs on four hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out two, needing just 49 pitches.
  • Quintanilla, Yanzuk, and Geiszler all had two hits.
