Softball comes back for late-inning win over University of Saint Francis

TUCSON, Ariz. – Amanda Burch hit a tie-breaking solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the University of Jamestown softball team went on to defeat University of Saint Francis (Ill.) 7-4 Thursday morning, the Jimmies' eighth straight victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • USF led 3-0 after scoring two times in the second and another in the third.
  • The Jimmies had just one base runner through three innings, a one-out walk to Lauren Weigel in the bottom of the first.
  • Jamestown got their first hits in the bottom of the fourth as Maddie Spaeth and Burch had singles, but UJ couldn't advance a runner past second base.
  • The Jimmies rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Weigel reached on an error to score Kayla Quintanilla and Kylie Yanzuk while Trinity Gregg advanced to third. One out later, Weigel and Gregg pulled off a double steal, with Gregg's swipe of home making it 3-3.
  • Leading off the bottom of the sixth, Burch blasted her first collegiate home run to left center, putting the Jimmies ahead 4-3.
  • Kaitlin McCartney followed with a double, and pinch-runner Rylie Welk scored on Quintanilla's two-out single. Sonya Rodgers came on to run for Quintanilla and took third on a single by Gregg. Weigel and Spaeth hit back-to-back run-scoring singles as Jamestown pushed their lead to 7-3.
  • USF added a single run in the top of the seventh and had runners at second and third, but Abby Blair got the final batter to ground out for the third out.  
  • Hope Ransome started in the circle and pitched three innings, giving up one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts.
  • Maddie Hairgrove (5-1) was the winning pitcher after she came on in relief to start the fourth inning. She pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
  • Blair got the final three outs on 11 pitches.
  • Burch and Spaeth had two hits each, and five other Jimmies had hits.
