Softball takes down two top-10 teams in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The University of Jamestown softball team posted victories over two top-10 teams on Wednesday, defeating No. 10 Madonna (Mich.) University 7-6 and No. 4 Northwestern (Iowa) 8-4 in Tucson, Ariz., extending its winning streak to seven games.

JAMESTOWN VS. MADONNA
  • After seeing a 6-2 lead slip away, the Jimmies rallied for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Sidnie Aasen doubled to lead off the inning, then moved to third on a wild pitch. Trinity Gregg drew a walk, and one out later, Maddie Spaeth grounded out to first, allowing Aasen to score.
  • The Jimmies opened up a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth, with an error leading to three runs and another scoring on a single by Kate Geiszler.
  • Lauren Weigel, Kayla Quintanilla, and Natalie Draper all had two hits for Jamestown.
  • Hope Ransome struck out six in five innings but did not factor in the decision.
JAMESTOWN VS. NORTHWESTERN
  • Kayla Quintanilla hit a sacrifice fly and Kaitlin McCartney singled in two more runs to give UJ a 3-0 lead after one.
  • McCartney doubled in the third to score Lauren Weigel and Maddie Spaeth as the lead grew to 5-0.
  • Northwestern got on the board in the bottom of the third, but Weigel drove in Trinity Gregg to make it a five-run lead for the Jimmies.
  • Three runs by the Red Raiders in the bottom of the fifth cut the deficit to 6-4.
  • McCartney's second two-run double of the game came in the seventh, bringing in Spaeth and Natalie Draper to make it 8-4.
  • Abby Blair (4-4) pitched five innings for the win while Laura Ransome earned her second save.
  • McCartney finished 3-for-4 with 6 RBI. Gregg, Weigel, and Draper all had a pair of hits.
