Baseball completes comeback against Benedictine Mesa with walk-off winner

TUCSON, Ariz.—The Jimmie baseball team rallied from a 7-4 deficit in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, defeating Benedictine University Mesa 8-7 after the Redhawks took game one by a score of 3-1 at Kino Complex.

GAME ONE: BENEDICTINE MESA 3, JAMESTOWN 1 (7-inning game)
  • Ryan Radkey (2-1) went the distance on the bump for the Jimmies, giving up just three runs on five hits over six innings while striking out five.
  • The Redhawks led 2-0 after an RBI double by Joseph Cosenza in the bottom of the first, then added another run on Jude Sullivan's third-inning sacrifice fly.
  • UJ was blanked through five innings but managed one run in the top of the sixth. Will Bachman's double scored Chase Burke to cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • Ben Patton had a pair of hits for the Jimmies, including a double. Alex Alva added a triple.
GAME TWO: JAMESTOWN 8, BENEDICTINE MESA 7 (7-inning game)
  • Isaiah Roebuck doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh to score Ryan Muizelaar and Jamestown came away with an 8-7 win.
  • Muizelaar led off the inning with a single and moved to second on Sy Steele's sacrifice bunt. After an intentional walk to Triston Madison, Roebuck drilled the first pitch from Thomas Lockyear (1-1) into right center field for a double.
  • Ben Patton's double in the bottom of the second scored Roebuck and Landon Runge for a 2-0 lead.
  • Benedictine Mesa plated five runs in the top of the fourth, but the Jimmies got two of them back on RBIs from Patton and Varen Sabino.
  • UJ began their comeback in the bottom of the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Muizelaar brought the Jimmies within 7-5, then Ben Swennumson and Chase Burke had run-scoring singles in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.
  • Patton and Roebuck both finished with two hits.
  • Grayson Sargent (1-0) struck out two batters and allowed one hit over the final two innings to get the win in relief.
UP NEXT
  • The Jimmies will play Mount Marty (S.D.) University in a single nine-inning game on Tuesday in Tucson, Ariz., at 11:00 AM Central.
