Madison and Muizelaar homers help UJ to sweep of BenU Mesa

MESA, Ariz. – The University of Jamestown baseball team began its Arizona trip with a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon with a sweep of Benedictine University Mesa. The Jimmies scored the final six runs in a 7-6 game one victory, then used a seven-run seventh in a 10-4 triumph in game two.

GAME ONE: JAMESTOWN 7, BENEDICTINE MESA 6 (9-inning game)
  • Jordan Singleton scored the game's first run in the top of the second, coming home on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
  • Benedictine Mesa put up six runs in the bottom half of the second, four of them scored with two out, to take a 6-1 lead.
  • Isaiah Roebuck, Julian Romero, Will Bachman, and Chase Burke each drove in a run for UJ in the top of the fourth as the Jimmies cut the deficit to 6-5.
  • Alex Alva drew a walk to start off the seventh, and one out later, Triston Madison connected for a two-run homer to put Jamestown in front 7-6.
  • Ben Bohlmann (1-0) came on in relief of starter Avery Liestman and struck out six over three hitless innings to get the win.
  • Joe Hart recorded the final out for his first save, combining with Bohlmann and Ethan Petty (1 2/3 innings) to pitch five scoreless innings.
  • Romero went 2-for-3 for UJ, while Burke and Romero doubled and Bachman tripled.
GAME TWO: JAMESTOWN 10, BENEDICTINE MESA 4 (7-inning game)
  • Single runs in the second and third innings gave the Jimmies a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.
  • A solo home run for the Redhawks in the fourth cut UJ's lead to 2-1, but Chase Burke's RBI single in the sixth saw Jamestown retake a 2-run lead.
  • Benedictine Mesa rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth and led 4-3 going into the final inning.
  • After a one-out walk to Jordan Singleton, Triston Madison drilled a two-run home run to left field, putting the Jimmies back in front 5-4.
  • Jamestown continued to be successful with two outs, scoring five more times before the final out of the inning. Burke drew a bases-loaded walk that extended the lead to 6-4, and Ryan Muizelaar followed with a grand slam to make it 10-4.
  • Kai Mayfield (1-0), who came on to get the final out in the sixth, retired the side in order in the seventh and earned the win.
  • Madison was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and 2 RBI, just missing a double for the cycle.

  • Jamestown travels to Tucson, Ariz., on Sunday for a doubleheader against Benedictine Mesa beginning at 4:00 p.m. CST before an off day on Monday.
