Softball defeats DWU in final day of Nelson Family Bubble tournament

JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- The University of Jamestown softball team split its final two games Sunday in the final day of the Nelson Family Bubble Tournament, defeating Dakota Wesleyan 6-5 and losing to Mayville State 6-4.

GAME ONE vs. DAKOTA WESLEYAN
  • Abby Blair went 3-for-3 with a double and triple and drove in three runs, while Kayla Quintanilla also was 3-for-3 and scored twice.
  • UJ trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but took the lead on RBIs from Kate Geiszler and Lauren Weigel.
  • Quintanilla extended UJ's lead with a single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-2, then Blair followed with a two-run double that extended Jamestown's advantage to 6-2.
  • DWU strung together four hits in the top of the sixth and scored three times to get within 6-5.
  • Hope Ransome improved to 3-1, pitching 6 innings and striking out 7.
  • Maddie Hairgrove recorded the final three outs for her first save.
  • Maddie Spaeth also had a multi-hit game for UJ and stole two bases.
GAME TWO vs. MAYVILLE STATE
  • Mayville State scored four times in the bottom of the sixth, coming back from a 4-2 deficit to record a 6-4 win.
  • Lauren Weigel's triple in the top of the third drove in Trinity Gregg, then Maddie Spaeth singled in Weigel for a 2-1 Jimmie lead.
  • The Comets tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, but UJ retook the lead in the sixth.
  • Amanda Burch drew a one-out walk and Kayla Quintanilla connected for a two-run pinch-hit home run to make it 4-2.
  • Jamestown allowed a pair of walks with the bases loaded and hit a batter to drive in another as part of the Comets' four-run sixth.
  • UJ loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but were unable to get any closer, and the game ended 6-4.
  • Gregg was 2-for-3 and stole two bases, while Spaeth also had two hits.
  • Abby Blair started in the circle and gave up two runs in five innings but did not factor in the decision.

  • Jamestown hosts Minot State in a doubleheader at the Nelson Family Bubble on Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m.
