Softball splits with MSUB in home opener

JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- The University of Jamestown softball team split its home opener Thursday evening against Montana State University Billings Thursday evening at the Nelson Family Bubble. UJ won the first game 6-1 while the Yellowjackets responded with a 6-4 win in game two.

GAME ONE
  • With one out in the bottom of the first, Lauren Weigel singled and Kayla Quintanilla doubled to put runners on second and third. One out later, Maddie Spaeth doubled to left center to score Weigel and Quintanilla for a 2-0 Jimmie lead.
  • MSUB cut the UJ lead with a single run in the top of the second, but Jamestown answered In the bottom of the second. Sidnie Aasen reached on a one-out single and stole second base, then Trinity Gregg followed with a double to left to make it 3-0.
  • Spaeth singled in another run in the bottom of the fifth, and a pair of unearned runs in the sixth gave the Jimmies a 6-1 lead going into the seventh.
  • Aasen, Gregg, Spaeth, and Tori Olson each had two hits for Jamestown.
  • Hope Ransome (1-1) pitched six innings and struck out five to get the win.
GAME TWO
  • Bryn Lucht's grand slam highlighted a five-run third inning as MSUB led 5-0 as the Jimmies came to bat in the bottom of the third.
  • Hope Ransome reached on an error, allowing Lauren Weigel to cross the plate, then one batter later, Maddie Spaeth hit a sacrifice fly to bring Tori Olson home to make it 5-2.
  • Weigel drove in Trinity Gregg with a fifth-inning single as UJ got within 5-3, but the Yellowjackets answered with a run in the top of the sixth to retake a three-run lead.
  • Jamestown loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with one out, but came away with just one run and trailed by two going into the final inning.
  • Spaeth reached with a two-out single and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. However, Jamestown couldn't complete the comeback and settled for the split.
  • Maddie Hairgrove and Laura Ransome combined to allow one run over the final 4 2/3 innings in relief.
UP NEXT
  • Jamestown hosts Dickinson State at 3:30 p.m. Friday, then will take on University of Mary later on Friday at 8 p.m. in the Nelson Family Bubble.
