Jimmies start off 2025 with win at VCSU

VALLEY CITY, N.D.— The 24th-ranked University of Jamestown women's basketball team started the new year off with a victory Friday evening, defeated Valley City State University 72-54, improving to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in the North Star Athletic Association.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VCSU scored the first 8 points of the game before Kate Cordes got the Jimmies on the board with a three-pointer at the 6:28 mark.
  • Jailyn Martinson's three-pointer put Jamestown ahead 13-12, then after the Vikings retook the lead with a basket on the next trip down the floor, Martinson swished another three and the Jimmies never trailed again.
  • Jayden Wiest, Sarah Lenz, and Hali Savela all connected from long distance as UJ built a 25-14 after the first quarter.
  • Cordes drained another three with 1:33 before the half to cap off a 41-20 Jimmie run and the visitors took a 43-30 lead into halftime.
  • After shooting 9-for-19 on three-pointers in the first half, Jamestown attempted just two long-range shots in the third quarter, doing their damage inside the arc. UJ shot 7-for-12 (58 percent) on two-pointers, and Megan Oswald's putback at the end of the third made it 60-44.
  • The Jimmies kept their lead between 12 and 17 points in the fourth quarter, and Wiest made a three-pointer with 1:40 left as UJ took its largest lead of the game at 72-52.
  • Ten different players broke into the scoring column for Jamestown, led by Cordes with 19. Wiest was next with 9, followed by Oswald, Martinson, Savela, and Hannah Hagel with 8 points each.
  • Oswald grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds, with Jessika Lofstrom pulling down 4.
  • Savela, Cordes, and Kate Busek all passed out 3 assists.
  • Samantha Paulsen had 4 of UJ's season-high 17 steals.
