JAMESTOWN, N.D.— The University of Jamestown football team nearly capped off a fourth comeback against Mayville State (N.D.) University Saturday afternoon, but fell 26-20 at Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Mayville State 26, Jamestown 20
LOCATION: Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium, Jamestown, N.D.
RECORDS:  Jamestown 0-4 (0-2 NSAA), Mayville State 2-2 (1-1 NSAA)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After falling behind 26-14 with 6:51 to play, the Jimmies covered 56 yards in 7 plays, finding the end zone on a 17-yard pass from Martinez to Erastus Antsino to make it 26-20.
  • Mayville State looked to be on their way to putting the game to rest on the ensuing drive, but were faced with a fourth-and-one from the UJ 20. On a quarterback keeper, Jack Simmers got down to the 14 yard line, but Parker Chaffee forced a fumble that Jed Rantz recovered to give UJ one last hope with 1:55 remaining.
  • Martinez completed seven passes on the final drive, six of them to Colton Schumacher. With no timeouts remaining on 3rd and 7 from the Comet 22-yard line, Martinez appeared to have found Isaiah Roebuck in the end zone with a game-tying catch as time expired. However, the official ruled that Roebuck came down with the reception out of bounds, and the Jimmies were unable to challenge the call.
  • Carlos Julian's first-quarter 21-yard touchdown run and Ethan Hoffman's 14-yard catch helped the Jimmies get out to a 14-0 lead with 7:18 left in the first half.
  • Xyler Carlson returned the kickoff following Hoffman's touchdown 92 yards for the first MSU score, and Simmers ran in from 2 yards out to help the Comets tie the game at 14 with 32 seconds in the half.
  • Martinez was intercepted by Danzele Navy who returned the ball into Jimmie territory. A personal foul on UJ during the return added another 15 yards to the gain, and the Comets took advantage. Dylan Lamont found Darren Jones on a 25-yard reception as time expired and MSU went into halftime leading 20-14.
  • Jones caught another touchdown pass with 6:51 remaining to help Mayville State go ahead by two scores.
  • Jamestown churned out a season-high 444 yards of total offense. Martinez completed 24 of 37 passes for 233 yards. Julian carried 10 times for 81 yards as the Jimmies finished with 197 rushing yards. Schumacher led UJ receivers with 6 catches for 61 yards.
  • Jed Rantz had 11 tackles and Parker Chaffee 10 to lead the defense.

FOR THE FOES

  • Simmers ran for 79 yards on 21 carries and Isaiah Smith caught 3 passes for 83 yards.
