Box Score 2 WICHITA, Kan.-- The University of Jamestown softball team got off to a strong start Saturday, winning a pair of games at the Friends University Invitational.
The Jimmies defeated Friends 9-1 in six innings and took care of Bethel (Kan.) College 16-4 in five innings.
UJ 9, Friends 1 (6 innings)
Kat Miska (JR/Pequot Lakes, Minn.) was once again dominant in the circle for Jamestown in Saturday's opener, striking out 15 and allowing just one run on two hits in six innings. Miska improved to 3-1 on the year while lowering her opponent's batting average against to .093.
A solo home run in the bottom of the first put Friends ahead 1-0 but the Jimmies rallied for three runs in the top of the second and never trailed again. Lorigan Steuben (SO/Yacolt, Wash.)'s single scored Katie Reisdorfer (JR/Fresno, Calif.), and Morgan Geiszler (JR/Horace, N.D.) followed with a two-run single that drove in Steuben and Sydney Prussia (JR/Detroit Lakes, Minn.).
Geiszler's sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 4-1, and Jenna Remenar (FR/Vancouver, Wash.) came home in the fifth for a 5-1 lead.
UJ broke the game open in the top of the sixth with a four-run inning. Steuben and Santina Zito (SO/Boise, Idaho) had RBI singles, and two errors by the Falcons allowed Steuben and Geiszler to score as well.
The Jimmies finished with 10 hits. Geiszler, Remenar, Prussia, and Steuben all had two hits. Prussia and Mariah Wick (JR/Jamestown, N.D.) each stole a base.
UJ 16, Bethel 4 (5 innings)
Katie Reisdorfer smashed a three-run home run as part of a six-run first inning, and the Jimmies scored a season-high 16 runs in Saturday's second game against Bethel College.
Jamestown added a single run in the second, then put up four in the third and five more in the fourth.
The Jimmies finished with 11 hits, with Mariah Wick and Megan Neiles (FR/Winnipeg, MB) each going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Jenna Remenar, Santina Zito, Sydney Prussia, Molly Haley (FR/Atwater, Calif.), Becca Thompson (FR/Valley City, N.D.), and Lauren Diemert (FR/West Fargo, N.D.) also had hits.
Diemert also had three RBI in the game, and Zito drove in a pair. Morgan Geiszler, Jenna Remenar, Julia Byrne (SO/Andover, Minn.), and Kaydence Alvey (FR/Caldwell, Idaho) also drove in runs.
Six Jimmies (Geiszler, Wick, Neiles, Prussia, Reisdorfer, and Diemert) scored twice. Remenar, Steuben, Thompson, and Gentrey Turin (FR/Sandy, Ore.) each scored a run as well.
Katie Merchant (SO/South Haven, Minn.) (4-1) pitched three shutout innings for the win. She allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out four.
On Sunday, UJ (9-3) will play Oklahoma Panhandle State at noon and Friends at 4 p.m.
