Jimmie Men's Golf Breaks UJ Record

Saturday Golf at Dakota Wesleyan

The Jimmies couldn't quite recapture the magic.

After a school-record round of 284 on Friday at the Palace City Classic in Mitchell, S.D., the University of Jamestown men's golf team settled for a third-place finish in the 11-team meet after a score of 305 on Saturday.

The weather conditions took a toll on everybody as scores were up across the board. The course was tricky with the shorter, but challenging, front nine, and the longer back nine, which played easier.

"We played 27 great holes and nine bad holes," coach Dustin Jensen said. "It was kind of like a boxing match. The front nine holes almost knocked us out, but our guys showed some mental toughness and finished the final nine holes nicely."

Sophomore Tyler Baukol led the way for the Jimmies. After a blistering round of 67 on Friday, the Detroit Lakes, Minn., native posted a 75 on Saturday, but there were only four rounds better. Baukol finished tied for third at 142. He birdied three of his final four holes on Friday.

"You couldn't ask for much more," Jensen said of Baukol's play in recent weeks. "He's playing great golf."

Freshman Justin Goldsberry had the second-best score for the Jimmies with back-to-back 74s.

Tommy Rockis matched Baukol with a 75 Saturday. Rockis finished at 149 and Michael Strain 150. Kameron Hunter and Matt Vacek each had 152s.

Hastings College won the meet with a score of 580. Northwestern, ranked 15th last season, was second (581) eight ahead of the Jimmies.

"I'm really happy with where we're at. Yeah, we would have liked to have won this meet or gotten up to second, but overall we have to be pretty happy with how we're playing."

The Jimmie men have one more meet in the first half of the season in LaCrosse, Wis., next weekend.

The women finished the first half with a fourth-place finish out of nine teams.

Ashley Barnhart bounced back from a tough round Friday with a team-best 85 on Saturday. She finished four shots behind teammate Emily Larson, who was 16h overall at 174.

"We played pretty solid overall especially with as windy as it was," Jensen said.

Rebekah Kramer (188), Kaitlin Ost (191) and Alyssa Hartert (208) rounded out the lineup.

"I feel really good about the improvement the girls have made," Jensen said. "They'll keep working hard and get ready for the spring."
