Men's Soccer Game Preview: Jimmies Head Deep into the Rockies to Play Colorado Mesa Thursday

The University of Jamestown men's soccer team will play their first road game in the Rocky Mountains against the Colorado Mesa Mavericks on Thursday, September 3 at 7 p.m. MDT (8 p.m. CDT).

"Colorado Mesa will be another great test for us," said head coach Justin Gilfert. "I think if we start on the right note, we can handle the challenge they'll bring not only on the field but also playing in elevation."

The return to Grand Junction will be familiar territory of sorts for Gilfert, as he was the head men's soccer coach at Adams State University from 2022-24.

"Having coached in the RMAC, I know these teams and coaches and how the games can be so if we just play simple and smart, we will be successful," Gilfert said.

The Teams

Both teams sit at two games on the season, with the Jimmies at 0-0-2. Jamestown is coming off a 2-2 draw against South Dakota Mines at home on Monday, where all four of the game's goals were scored in the first 12 minutes.

Sohiab Bouika el Haddad Kaddour and Justin Junaid each scored their first career goals while Nuutti Norhomaa had his first career assist. Valon Ismaili made 10 saves on 12 Hardrocker shots on goal. Ismaili has had quite the start to the 2026 season now with a .900 save percentage (18 saves on 20 shots faced).

Colorado Mesa is 0-1-1 through a couple of road games thus far. The Mavericks tied UT Dallas 1-1, then got roughed up 6-1 by defending national champions and preseason No. 1 Midwestern State University. Richard Tabares Ochoa scored the lone goal against the Mustangs while both Tabares Ochoa and Justin Ibrahim each attempted three shots. Both Colorado Mesa netminders Kenneth Linn and Nathan Beck made one save each as they split time in between the pipes.

"Colorado Mesa is coming off a tough loss in their last game and with how the maturity of our last game was, I think the boys are ready," Gilfert noted.

Tabares Ochoa has each of the two goals so far on the season by the Mavericks while Kamden Kooiman has the only other point with an assist against UT Dallas. Beck, the primary goaltender that had a solid season in 2025, has struggled in net so far with the blowup game against Midwestern State. The senior has now allowed seven goals on 12 shots faced.

Thursday's clash will be the first recorded instance of the Jimmies playing the Mavericks in men's soccer.
