Jamestown, N.D. – The University of Jamestown women's volleyball team put on a dominating performance, sweeping the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena to conclude a 2-0 NSIC opening weekend.
The Jimmies are now off to a 9-1 start to begin the year. Crookston drops to 2-8 with an NSIC mark of 0-2.
Jamestown got off on the right foot where
Charlotte Lempka and
Caroline Puetz each had a kill and two block assists as the Jimmies pushed ahead 7-1 in the first set.
It was even play for a while after that, but with the score at 11-6, Jamestown had 13 of the next 16 points as Crookston was unable to get the ball past the Jimmies defense. Lempka was feeling it during this stretch, adding three more kills.
Kyleigh Schopp got UJ their set point at 25-10.
Crookston committed 10 attacking errors in the first set with their percentage at -.133 (6-10-30) while the Jimmies were firing .538 (15-1-26).
The second set was just as dominant for UJ, starting ahead 6-1, then going up 13-3 with seven straight points. Adamson had two kills in this run while
Sophie Ketterling had an ace and Lempka added to her growing kill total with another slam.
Adamson had three kills as part of another 7-0 run a bit later in the set with Jamestown running away with set number two 20-5. The final points consisted of a
Kallyn Grove kill, an
Ava Bertsch ace, and the final point was a block by Puetz and
Addison Brooke as the Jimmies won 25-10 for the second straight set.
Elite attacking was on display again in the second set as Jamestown never committed an attacking error and hit .400 (10-0-25). Crookston struggled again with seven kills and seven errors.
Set number three was a bit tighter as the Golden Eagles looked to stay alive, but the Jimmies never trailed once in the set or altogether in the match.
Mya Foslien had a kill as the ninth Jamestown point, then an attack error gave UJ their 10
th point as the score was 10-6.
A bit later, five straight points capped by a Foslien service ace put the Jimmies in control 15-8. Crookston made a bit of statement with a 4-0 run later to make the set 21-18, but Jamestown finished off the Golden Eagles with the final three points of the match to sweep Crookston in Harold Newman.
Jamestown had a balance attack of Adamson leading the team with seven kills, while Foslien, Puetz, and Lempka had six, and Schopp had five. Lempka attacked .667 (6-0-9) while Schopp was at .455 (5-0-11). Defensively Puetz led the Jimmies with four blocks and Ketterling had 13 digs. Bertsch set up the offense with a team-high 18 assists.
The Jimmies had a season-high attacking percentage of .326 (33-5-86), while the Golden Eagles were at .021 (27-25-94). Jamestown also had more aces (5-3), blocks (8-3), and assists (29-26), while Crookston had slightly more digs (39-35).
Jamestown will next head on the road for their first conference away games against Bemidji State University on Friday, September 18, and the University of Minnesota Duluth the following day.
