Cold second quarter proves costly as Jimmies fall at Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Jamestown women's basketball team was unable to overcome a difficult second quarter on Friday night, falling 71-65 to Augustana University at the Elmen Center.

The loss drops the Jimmies to 4-9 overall and 2-7 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, while the Vikings improve to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in league play.

After a competitive first quarter that saw Jamestown hold an 18-17 lead, the Jimmies' offense went cold in the second frame. Jamestown managed just four points in the period, allowing Augustana to outscore them 17-4 and take a 34-22 advantage into halftime.

The Jimmies fought back in the second half, putting up 24 points in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth to outscore the Vikings 43-37 after the break, but the halftime deficit proved too large to overcome.

Jessika Lofstrom led the Jimmies with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Allie Berns also reached double figures, finishing with 11 points while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Haidyn Crockett contributed 10 points for Jamestown, and Hali Savela added nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range. The Jimmies found success from deep, converting 12-of-32 (37.5 percent) attempts from beyond the arc.

Isabella Sanneh was a force in the paint for the Vikings, recording a double-double with game-highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds. Addie Hanna chipped in 11 points and three assists, while Maliyah Elliott added 10 points for the hosts.

Augustana controlled the glass, significantly outrebounding Jamestown 42-29, including 10 offensive boards. The Vikings also shot efficiently, finishing the night at 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the field compared to 32.1 percent (18-of-56) for the Jimmies.

The Jimmies travel to Wayne, Neb., on Saturday for a 5:30 tip against Wayne State College.
