JAMESTOWN, N.D.— The University of Jamestown football team reclaimed the Paint Bucket Trophy Saturday afternoon, scoring 28 straight points to defeat Valley City State (N.D.) University 28-17 in the season finale at Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Jamestown 28, Valley City State 17
LOCATION: Rollie Greeno Field at Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium, Jamestown, N.D.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • VCSU built a 17-0 lead behind Yzan Lorenzo's 46-yard field goal and pair of rushing touchdowns by Lagarrius Marshell.
  • With 48 seconds left before halftime, the Jimmies got on the scoreboard. Johnny Grann found Colton Schumacher on a 24-yard pass in the right corner of the end zone to make it 17-6.
  • After each team punted on their first possession of the second half, Jamestown wasted little time as they got the ball for the second time in the third quarter. On the first play of the drive, Isaiah Roebuck caught a Grann pass and turned it into a 70-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt failed, and UJ trailed 17-12 a little under five minutes into the second half.
  • Aanon Peterson connected on a 27-yard field goal to cut the Vikings' lead to 17-15 with 31 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
  • Jamestown took the lead early in the fourth. Tyler Dean sacked VCSU quarterback Noah Chambers for a 13-yard loss back at the Viking 9-yard line to set up fourth down. Ezra Belingheri came up with another big defensive play, blocking Jim Miller's end zone punt. Although Belingheri was credited with a blocked punt, and recovery, the ball never left his hands, and the third defensive touchdown of the season for the UJ linebacker made it 22-17 with 14:14 left to play.
  • Grann capped off the scoring with a two-yard push into the end zone at the 7:32 mark for a 28-17 Jamestown lead.
  • Jimmie special teams made another key play on the ensuing kickoff. Kolby Jones returned the kick to his own 37-yard line, but Gabe Krick forced a fumble that Gunnar Stephens pounced on, giving UJ another short field. Although Jamestown did not add to their lead, the drive ate up 3:20 of clock time, making a VCSU comeback less likely.
  • Jamestown put the final nail in the coffin with just over three minutes remaining as Mason Parker intercepted a deflected pass at the Jimmies' 48-yard line to end another Viking drive.
  • Grann finished with 262 yards on 23-of-36 passing with a pair of touchdowns and no interceptions.
  • Zach Hammett picked up 55 yards rushing on 13 carries, followed by Carlos Julian's 37 yards on six carries.
  • Schumacher had five catches for 74 yards and Roebuck had a team-high 76 receiving yards on three catches.
  • Jed Rantz had eight tackles on defense, with Dean adding 7. Dean had 2.5 of UJ's 5 sacks on the day.
