ACHA Division 1 Men's Hockey

Ninth-ranked Jimmies doubled up by No. 7 Drury

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The momentum from Friday night's University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 men's hockey upset victory hit a wall on Saturday afternoon, as the undefeated Drury University Panthers flexed its offensive muscle in a 6-3 victory at Canlan Sports.

Coming off a spirited win over Ohio University, Jamestown (10-7) looked to hand Drury (16-0) its first loss of the season. However, a disastrous start and special teams struggles proved too much for the Jimmies to overcome against the high-powered Drury attack.

Drury University wasted no time asserting their dominance, jumping out to a quick lead in the first period. Francis Young-Menard opened the scoring just 3:10 into the contest, assisted by Anmol Garcha and Daniel Beaupre.

Special teams play, which would become a theme of the night, widened the gap midway through the opening frame. K-T Walters capitalized on a power play opportunity at 10:06, netting his 10th goal of the season to give Drury a 2-0 cushion heading into the first intermission.

The game threatened to turn into a rout early in the second period. Nolan Bowsher extended the Drury lead to 3-0 at the 1:34 mark. Less than three minutes later, Daniel Beaupre scored his 13th of the season, making it 4-0 and chasing UJ starting goaltender Brandon Weare from the net.

Weare, the hero of Friday night's win, was pulled at 4:06 after surrendering four goals on 12 shots. He was replaced by Jordan Lott, who steadied the ship for the Jimmies.

UJ finally broke the shutout bid at 15:20 of the second, when defenseman Wyatt Johnson scored off a feed from Malachi Franklin. However, Drury responded with a dagger late in the period. Tyson Horiachka converted another power play chance at 17:28 to restore the four-goal advantage at 5-1.

Despite the deficit, the Jimmies showed fight in the third period. Brad Fortin provided a spark with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 2:37, cutting the lead to 5-2.

Jamestown continued to chip away when defenseman Griffin Bourassa netted his first goal of the season at 8:05, assisted by Carson Brown and Alek Erichuk, bringing the score to a manageable 5-3.

However, Drury stifled the comeback attempt in the closing minutes. Bowsher scored his second goal of the game at 18:14 to seal the 6-3 victory and keep Drury's perfect record intact.

Jozef Kuchaslo earned the win, stopping 25 of 28 shots. Weare took the loss, making eight saves on 12 shots. Lott was solid in relief, stopping 18 of 20 shots.

Jamestown finishes the weekend trip in Romeoville on Sunday, taking on No. 17 University of Utah at 11:10 a.m.
